The North Carolina Historical and Genealogical Register
Chief among its contents we find abstracts of land grants, court records, conveyances, births, deaths, marriages, wills, petitions, military records (including a list of North Carolina Officers and Soldiers of the Continental Line, 1775-1782), licenses, and oaths. The abstracts derive from records now located in the state archives and from the public records of the following present-day counties of the Old Albemarle region: Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Halifax, Hyde, Martin, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington, and the Virginia counties of Surry and Isle of Wight.

When War Ends
This volume critically examines what happens when war formally ends, the difficult and complex challenges and opportunities for winning the peace and reconciling divided communities. By reviewing a case study of the West African state of Sierra Leone, potential lessons for other parts of the world can be gained. Sierra Leone has emerged as a 'successful' model of liberal peacebuilding that is now popularly advertised and promoted by the international community as a powerful example of a country that they finally got right. Letters My Grandfather Wrote Me
The Douglases are traced from 100 A.D. with ancestral background in Ireland around 300 B.C. There is an American branch from the 18th century with connections to the U.S. war of independence and the anti-slave movement. The Crawfords are shown in their early history around the 12th century, then since the early 19th Century in Scotland, Ireland and New Zealand. The Clarks are shown since the mid 19thcentury but with strong Huguenot roots in the 17th century. The Gagens are traced from Germany to Norfolk in the U.K. in the 17th century; and to Canada and America in the 19th, where Dan Gagen married into the Chippewa tribe. The book is about Cyril Gagen who settled in New Zealand with his mid-wife mother in the early 20th century, and is written by his grandson. The last chapter is autobiographical with an in-depth discussion on Social Control and the ethics of its use in modern Britain and New Zealand. The Clarion review states that the book is anti-monarchist which is totally incorrect.

Swift's Silver Mines and Related Appalachian Treasures
Of all the myths, legends, and stories, one man’s hidden treasure stands above the rest. Jonathan Swift’s lost silver mines have been woven into legend and passed from one generation to the next for more than 230 years. Beginning with an introduction by the late Michael Paul Henson, nationally known treasure expert, this comprehensive volume explores the legend of this enigmatic character who mined the mountains of Appalachia from 1761 until 1769. Unable to remove his entire cache of silver when he left the region, Swift hid much of his treasure in the mines. When he returned in the late 1700s to retrieve the secret caches, he was unable to locate them. During this time, copies of a journal kept by Swift (giving directions and clues to the hidden stashes) were sold and/or given away. Steely has collected and compared legends from across the region, found maps and old journals, and compiled all the information in this interesting, organized book for treasure hunters and historians. Drawing upon treasure lore from the Shawnee, Cherokee, Spanish, French, and Melungeons, this work spans Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, and Alabama.
