Liebel presents critical postcolonial and decolonial thought currents along with international case studies from countries in Africa, Latin America, and former British settler colonies to examine the complex and multiple ways that children throughout the Global South continue to live with the legacy of colonialism. Building on the work of Cannella and Viruru, he explores how these children are affected by unequal power relations, paternalistic policies and violence by state and non-state actors, before showing how we can work to ensure that children’s rights are better promoted and protected, globally.
Children, Childhood, and the Future
Although most of the world’s children live in the Global South, much of the corpus of scientific knowledge which forms the basis of the current notion of “good childhood” worldwide is drawn from research on Western, middle-class children. Even cross-cultural research often applies the Western model of childhood as the standard to which others must correspond. This volume serves to bridge this gap by both bringing up significant features of the development and socialisation of children in African countries and presenting cross-cultural procedures which help to discuss and develop differentiated and joint ideas about childhood, instead of implementing one-sided standards which are disconnected from most children’s lives.

By far the majority of South African students get their schooling in a second language, which means that our classrooms are multilingual. This state of affairs is not exclusive to our country, as can be seen in the many academic conferences on multilingual learning and teaching. Terms like translanguaging and biliteracy appear in many articles and books that discuss the role language in education. What makes the multilingual nature of our South African classrooms challenging, is the fact that many learners switch from one language of learning and teaching to another at various points in their school career: from home language to English or Afrikaans after the foundation phase, from one language of learning and teaching to another when they move to new schools, high school or tertiary institutions.
