Fountain City
Named for its ebullient natural springs, Fountain City, Tennessee, has a rich history and a truly unique identity. Originally established in 1788 by John Adair as Adair's Fort, this area was a depot for the Cumberland Guard, which protected emigrant families traveling to settlements in present-day Nashville. With a population of about 30,000, Fountain City was thought to be the nation's largest unincorporated city by the mid-20th century. Though this distinction was lost when the community was incorporated into Knoxville in 1962, Fountain City has maintained a separate identity and preserved its extensive history. Filled with detailed images of the area, this volume provides a rare glimpse of the people, places, and events that have molded the suburb into an ideal environment in which to learn, relax, and enjoy a myriad of recreational activities.

Bristol to Knoxville: A Postcard Tour takes us on a journey back to a simpler time, 1939, and invites us to tour the towns of East Tennessee by means of the picture postcard. The 1930s were fascinating years in America. It was a time of struggle, and yet of hope; of hardship, and yet of optimism. America fought her way through the Depression to emerge the better for it, and those who came through were determined to live the American dream. In 1939, as in previous decades, the postcard was a supremely popular means of fast and easy communication. Postcard companies sent their photographers all over America, to cities and crossroads alike. These photographers captured on film scenes that would prove popular commercially, but in doing so, they were unknowingly creating a tremendous archive of historical images that are of great value today for the insights they offer into the way life was lived in the early twentieth century.
Forward Through the Ages
Once upon a time, a small group of worshippers came together under an old oak tree in an arroyo. Out of that gathering eventually blossomed the church now known as Calvary Presbyterian Church, South Pasadena, California. The little congregation struggled to survive for 10 years - 1887 to 1897 but simply couldnt support the church financially, and finally had to disband. Five years later, however, life was breathed back into the church, and this time it took. Nearly 110 years have past since that little congregation was re-organized, and the church it became is still strong. This first volume of the churchs history aims to capture the lost or hidden years, and to describe the life of the church up to 1925, the year the congregation moved into the beautiful three-story gothic building it now occupies. This is the story of Calvarys earliest pastors and the people who enriched the church, all in the context of the dawning community of South Pasadena, California.
