Virus Diseases in Laboratory and Captive Animals

The influence of basic science, particularly molecular biology, in human and veterinary medicine revolutionized thinking in many aspects and changed fundamentally and creatively the classical strategy for research and prevention of infectious diseases. Genetic engineering and related disciplines have progressed to a remarkable degree over the last decade and now form the keystone supporting medicine. These are strong and efficient instruments for health and disease oriented research and their application gives the opportunity to receive more answers and not only more questions. The prime objective of this book is to create new knowledge within the medical disciplines and inspire colleagues w...

Hardbound. Tumor epidemiology has traditionally used an analytical approach. In order to study the role played by endogenous factors, such as the biological response to tumors, and genetic and physiological factors, a new approach is required. The retroviruses and oncogens illustrate the need to integrate the study of endogenous and exogenous factors in cancer epidemiology. The new ap proach proposed to cancer epidemiology could hopefully have relevant results, for instance in regard to iatrogenic tumors or tumor prevention. If the reason why most secondary tumors are either acute myeloid leukemias or lymphomas can be understood, it may be possible to prevent these iatrogenic tumors now seen in almost 10 per cent of long term survivors.

Simian Virology

Simian Virology is the first text to comprehensively cover all currently known simian viruses. Chapters provide an overview of nonhuman primate models of medically important viral diseases as well as natural infections of nonhuman primates with human and animal viruses. The text covers a variety of topics including primate models of medically important viral diseases such as AIDS, hypotheses on the origins of epidemic forms of HIV, and viral diseases caused by non-simian viruses in both wild and captive primates.

DNA-Based Markers in Plants

With the new techniques described in this volume, a new gene can be placed on the linkage map within only a few days. Leading researchers have updated the earlier edition to include the latest versions of DNA-based marker maps for a variety of important crops.

The Herpesviruses

'You damn sadist/said mr cummings 'you try to make people think. ' -Ezra Pound (Canto 89) What makes herpesviruses unique? It is certainly not the size of their genomes or the individual features of their reproductive cycle, although in toto striking features that are exclusive to the herpesviruses abound. Unquestionably, the pre-eminent feature is the relationship of herpes viruses with their natural hosts. As described in preceding volumes, all herpesviruses seem to be able to colonize and to remain in a latent, nonproductive form for life of their hosts. Once established in the host, the relationship is best described as that of an armed truce. What happens when this truce breaks down or ...
