Corpus-based Analysis and Diachronic Linguistics
Nowadays, linguists do not question the existence of synchronic variation, and the dichotomy between synchrony and diachrony. They recognize that synchrony can be motivated regionally (diatopic variation), sociolinguistically (diastratic variation), or stylistically (diaphasic variation). But, further, they can also recognize the hybrid nature of synchrony, which is referred to as "dynamic synchrony." This conception of synchrony assumes that similar patterns of usage can coexist in a community during a certain period and that their mutual relations are not static but conflicting enough to result in a future systematic change through symptomatic synchronic variation. Emergence of a large corpus of written texts for some languages has enabled quantitative as well as qualitative analyses of the synchronic conditions for diachronic changes, over both long and short spans of time. Most of the 14 papers in this volume represent studies on synchronic and diachronic variations based on such corpus data. For sale in all countries except Japan. Indo-US Relations, The Formative Years, 1947-1960
The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 put the Indian foreign policy in a bind. The West sought the solidarity of all like-minded countries to oppose the Russian aggression in Ukraine. India, as usual, was unwilling to join either side. The European Union and the United States have been very unhappy with the Indian stand. After more than 75 years of independence, India continues to maintain its strategic independence, although the main thrust of the US policy towards India has always been to make India an American ally; first against Chinese communism and now as a counterweight to growing military might and economic strength of China. The present work seeks to examine the tumultuous relationship between the two countries at the height of Cold War rivalries.
Coal Industry in West Bengal
Coal Industry in West Bengal: A Historical Analysis of Production, Price, Wage, Employment and Investment, is a pioneering attempt which has determined the quantitative relationship between the parameters (i) production and price, (ii) employment and output, (iii) employment and wage, (iv) average productivity and real wage, (v) size of firms and average productivity, and (vi) size of firms and rate of profit, covering a wide range of data from 1901-1976 on production, employment, productivity, wages and prices of the Coal Industry in West Bengal. This book has examined the changes in wage-share from 1901 through 1976. The values of the parameters obtained through the fitting of Cobb-Doughlas production function and SMAC (ARROW-CHENERY-MINHAS-SULOW) function have also been reported here. This work determined the factors governing the investment and relationship between the production and investment in the Coal Industry of West Bengal.
