Apprenticeship in early modern Europe has been the subject of important research in the last decades, mostly by economic historians; but the majority of the research has dealt with cities or countries in Northern Europe. The organization, evolution and purpose of apprenticeship in Southern Europe are much less studied, especially for the early modern period. Durante le celebrazioni per il quinto centenario leonardiano, e sotto il patrocinio del loro Comitato Nazionale, una “bottega del sapere del XXI secolo” ha lavorato alacremente in chiave interdisciplinare, spaziando su molti aspetti (dall’ingegneria alla filosofia della natura, alla storia dell’architettura, alla lettura delle fonti, alle conoscenze tecniche, all’analisi dei progetti, all’interpretazione cartografica), con l’obiettivo di contribuire all’avanzamento degli studi su una figura di artista-ricercatore che sintetizzava in uno straordinario linguaggio verbo-visivo le conoscenze del suo tempo, spingendole avanti con aperture e intuizioni ancor oggi rilevanti per il progetto contemporaneo, che interpreta il territorio come bene comune ed essere vivente.
