The 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) brought together almost every country in the world in an effort to have the global community commit itself to the goal of sustainable development. Among its major achievements was Agenda 21, an ambitious plan of action on 39 environment and development issues. The United Nations subsequently created the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) to monitor progress towards achievement of UNCED's goals. This report of Canada to the CSD summarizes the progress, lessons learned, and challenges in achieving the goals of sustainable development. It concentrates on the chapters and themes in Agenda 21 that will be discussed at the next session of the CSD. It attempts to isolate the major trends and themes in Canadian responses to each of those chapters. It also includes short summaries of recent developments in topics related to the sectoral chapters discussed during the latest session of the CSD.
Communities, Development, and Sustainability across Canada
What is a sustainable community? The pressing need to answer this simple question is what prompted John Pierce and Ann Dale to gather the essays in this volume. Communities, Development, and Sustainability across Canada is a timely synthesis of work on how Canadian communities can achieve sustainable development. It bridges the gap between theory and praxis and brings together academics, policy makers, and community activists, all of whom have argued for increased local participation in sustainable community development. Communities have become the weak link in efforts to refashion relations between the environment and the economy. The goal of this book is not simply to describe problems but also to suggest answers, not simply to offer theory but also to promote action, so that Canadian communities can better achieve sustainable development.
Building Momentum
The purpose of this report is to identify and describe important trends in Canada over the last quarter century, which taken together provide a snapshot of Canada's progress toward sustainable development. Details on issues and specific initiatives can be found in the list of selected readings at the end. This report is not a comprehensive scorecard. Rather, it is intended to illustrate how conditions in Canada have changed, to demonstrate how issues, priorities, thinking, and responses have evolved during a dynamic quarter century, and to highlight challenges that remain in our quest for a sustainable future.
Planning for a Sustainable Future
The federal sustainable development strategy (FSDS) outlines the government's commitment to strengthen the application of strategic environmental assessments (SEA). This will improve the consideration of environmental concerns when making economic or social decisions by applying the FSDS goals and targets when undertaking SEAs, reporting on the results of SEAs in Departmental Performance Reports (DPR), and describing the contribution of a proposal to the achievement of the FSDS goals and targets in the SEA public statements. Goals, targets, and implementation strategies outlined in the Annex give a detailed description of federal government activities under each heading, so for the first time it is possible to see all activities in one place. The FSDS describes in detail how departments will report using the Expenditure Management System and what their Reports on Plans and Priorities (RPP) and DPRs will look like using the FSDS goals and targets. It illustrates how the Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators (CESI) will be used to report progress on goals and targets. The first progress report is planned for spring 2011.--Document
Canadian Youth Perspectives on Sustainable Development
Several youth organizations and many young people took part in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in June 1992. They united to ensure that the UNCED process addressed issues that were important to them, such as poverty and overconsumption. Most important, these young people wanted to have a voice in decisions that would affect their future. This document looks at Canadian youth perspectives on sustainable development. Topics covered are: youth issues and initiatives in Canada; suggestions for other youths in Canada; and, youth goals for Canada at the special session and beyond.
Sustainable Development
This report provides an overview of Canada's major environmental, social and economic developments over the last decade. It highlights some of Canada's successes, speaks of some of the remaining challenges and explores some of the current efforts underway to meet those challenges. It examines, more specifically, the following: decision-making structures and processes; social sustainability; sustainable communities; health and environment; conservation and stewardship of biodiversity; sustainable development of natural resources; climate change; the Canadian Arctic; international cooperation.
Achieving Sustainable Development
Achieving Sustainable Development explores how well Canada has met the Earth Summit's targets and attempts to find ways in which the public can become involved in such issues. Its authors stress the importance of integration of information from various fields and seek to stimulate the exchange of knowledge among the academic community, government, non-governmental organizations and industry. The contributors look far beyond merely identifying and analyzing selected issues and problems. To facilitate public discussion and to affect policy development, at least one initiative is proposed and detailed for each problem identified.
