Cardinal Mercier in the First World War

Church leaders and their contrasting opinions in the face of the Great War Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier, Archbishop of Malines, was the incarnation of the Belgian resistance against the German occupation during the First World War. With his famous pastoral letter of Christmas 1914 ‘Patriotisme et Endurance’ he reached a wide audience, and gained international influence and respect. Mercier’s distinct patriotic stance clearly determined his views of national politics, especially of the 'Flemish question', and his conflict with the German occupier made him a hero of the Allies. The Germans did not always know how to handle this influential man of the Church. Pope Benedict XV did not always approve of the course of action adopted by the Belgian prelate. Whereas Mercier justified the war effort as a just cause in view of the restoration of Belgium's independence, the Pope feared that "this useless massacre" meant nothing but the "suicide of civilized Europe”. Through a critical analysis of the policies of Cardinal Mercier and Pope Benedict XV, this book sheds revealing light on the contrasting positions of Church leaders in the face of the Great War.

I THINK I owe the public a word of explanation as to how this book has seen the light. During the war, and more frequently after the armistice, I was asked would I write a narrative of my war experiences. I had taken many notes of events as they had occurred, and my memory was full of incidents in which I was concerned. Much as I would have wished to write such a story, from some points of view, if only to vindicate my country against its detractors, the libels circulated by its enemies, yet I felt, more and more inevitably as the weeks rolled by, that I would never have time to write this book. I then thought of my correspondence with the German authorities right through the war. Here are m...

Medievalism

In his Lenten pastoral letter of 1908, Cardinal Mercier, the primate of Belgium, attacked Modernism and George Tyrrell as its leading exponent, and then distributed it as a pamphlet. This volume includes the text of the pastoral letter (in English and in French) and Tyrrell's response. Tyrrell takes on the Cardinal's attack point by point on tradition, bishops, papal authority, heresy, Kant, Darwin, Since you have thought fit to mention me by name in your Lenten Pastoral (1908) as the most typical embodiment of the Modernism which you are there denouncing; since you profess to draw your description of that movement from my writings; since your Pastoral has received the special commendation o...
