Paul Klee
Paul Klee, best known for his mastery of color and semi-abstract patchwork paintings of squares, completed more than 10,000 paintings, drawings, and etchings during his life. His work is difficult to classify but widely admired and highly sought after. Carl Djerassi, scientist, novelist, philanthropist, most famous for inventing the birth control pill, was a great fan of Klee and amassed one of the most important private collections of his work in the world. This catalog reproduces highlights from the collection, now owned by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, including full-color images of nearly one hundred rarely published works. These drawings, sketches, gouache and watercolors reflect the whole of Klee's short but prolific career and are among his most beautiful and important works. The text includes background and critical commentary from noted Klee experts. In addition, an interview with Djerassi reveals his artistic endeavors and passion for Klee, a creative genius whose energy, versatility, productivity, and vision speak volumes to the scientist and anyone interested in the inventive power of the imagination.

Missing Link
Photography, more than any other medium, has altered the way we see ourselves and changed our perception of art. Pictures of people have become part and parcel of our daily life, influencing us through advertising and media. At the same time, the status of the human image in art has been enhanced, even though photography has called into question traditional views of art. Photography is, as it were, the "missing link" between man, the image of man and art.
Museum Hermann Nitsch
The important Vienna Actionist Hermann Nitsch once said, ""Red is the color that people register the most because it is simultaneously the color of life and death."" Originally inspired by French Tachisme and American Abstract Expressionism, Nitsch began working with paint in the late 1950s and early 60s, putting on ""theatrical painting actions"" in order to produce large-scale spill paintings. Up until the very early 1960s, his canvases were often still stained with evocative rivers of red paint; over the ensuing years, he would gradually replace paint with blood and stretched canvases with unstretched bed sheets, bringing an assortment of new and highly charged ""materials"" into his practice, including internal organs, animal cadavers and human bodies. From the 1960s until the late 1990s, Nitsch staged nearly 100 ritualistic performance actions in his Theater of Orgies and Mysteries series. Through the complete set of these often incendiary actions, which included live slaughters, dance, music and other pagan gestures, Nitsch realized his concept for a total work of art that brings together painting, architecture and music with the catharsis of self-recognition.
