The Reception of Jonathan Swift in Europe

Jonathan Swift has had a profound impact on almost all the national literatures of Continental Europe. The celebrated author of acknowledged masterpieces like A Tale of a Tub (1704), Gulliver's Travels (1726), and A Modest Proposal (1729), the Dean of St Patrick's, Dublin, was courted by innumerable translators, adaptors, and retellers, admired and challenged by shoals of critics, and creatively imitated by both novelists and playwrights, not only in Central Europe (Germany and Switzerland) but also in its northern (Denmark and Sweden) and southern (Italy, Spain, and Portugal) outposts, as well as its eastern (Poland and Russia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria) and Western parts - from the beginning of the eighteenth century to the present day.

In 1934 Frank Buchman's Oxford Group movement, a precursor to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), was invited to Norway. It made a deep impression upon Ronald Fangen, a young novelist and dramatist. Thereafter, as a Christian humanist, he attempted to persuade the Church to appreciate and learn from the Arts since such efforts would support the proclamation of its message. His writings beckon readers to sense with him the constant tension to communicate in the best way the Christian message in each generation; with this tension Fangen wrestled. The challenge continues today.

Transforming Kafka

Patrick O'Neill approaches five of Kafka's novels and short stories by considering the many translations of each work as a single, multilingual “macrotext.”

Sigrid Undset

Novelist Sigrid Undset (1882–1949) left a mark on twentieth-century literature, not only in her homeland of Norway, but across the West. Her painterly eye for the Scandinavian countryside, her uncompromising emotional realism, her concrete sense of history, her bold vision of woman and man—these won her such acclaim that she received the 1928 Nobel Prize for Literature, not long after the publication of her epic historical novel, Kristin Lavransdatter. During World War II, she loudly opposed anti-Semitism and the Nazi regime, and in the final years of her life, the Norwegian state awarded her the Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Olav—the first time this honor was given to a woman outs...
