Linda Amaya has written Boats and Folks from Carlton E. Appelo's extensive archival collection. Within its covers are personal comments and observations, as well as historical fact and handed-down fables gathered from tattered journals and diaries. The book is a chronicle of ethnic groups who migrated to the lwoer Columbia in Southwest Washington, finding the clime and landscape similar to their homelands. The story is a composite of local folks and their boats, quotations of descriptive seafaring lore, and Appelo's taped oral history interviews from the past 50-60 years. Both reader and visitor will discover third and fourth generations continuing to live on original homesteads in Wahkiakum and Pacific counties.
