To this end, we will examine the principal aspects involved in the implementation process, based on international experience, with special emphasis on what is distinctive in the regional context.
The Health Promoting School
This book brings together recent international scholarship on the links between education and health, and recent research evidence evaluating the processes and outcomes of health promoting schools initiatives. The book arises out of the Education and Health in Partnership conference, which took place in Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands in September 2002. The key aims of the conference were to focus on effective partnership working for health in schools and to consider the evidence base for health promoting schools programmes. A significant outcome of the conference was the Egmond Agenda, which outlines the principal components for success in establishing health promoting schools.Contributors from across Europe, the United States, South Africa and Australia present findings from national health promoting school projects, with a particular emphasis on the promotion of mental health.The volume will be of interest to all education and health professionals interested in the contributions of schools in promoting health, empowerment, action competence and wellbeing of young people.
A Person-Centered Approach to Psychospiritual Maturation

Civic Engagement as an Educational Goal
A modern democratic society depends on the civic engagement of its citizens. Growing cultural pluralism and economic globalization have brought greater complexity to all areas of life. Young people in particular need diverse opportunities in order to enrich their experience, to learn about civic responsibility and to strengthen their communities. Furthermore, the topic is important since it shapes a path to overcome social inequalities in education and to use the untapped potential for-and declining interest in-political participation among youth. With the 2007 Carl Bertelsmann Prize for Civic Engagement as an Educational Goal the Bertelsmann Stiftung presents approaches in diverse countries and discusses how they meet the challenge to promote civic engagement in schools and early childhood education and care. The report also gives a short overview of the status quo of civic engagement in Germany and suggests some reforms for the future.
