This book offers a fresh and timely 'European' perspective on Wales and Welshness. Uncovering rare travel texts in French and German from 1780 to now it provides a valuable case-study of a culture that is often minoritized, and demonstrates the value of multilingual research and a transnational approach.
Cultural modernity has habitually been defined as a focus on the means of representation themselves, as opposed to art that imitates external reality or expresses its maker's inner life. The crucial moment is usually considered the emergence of Edouard Manet in mid-nineteenth-century France, and the features of French developments have been seen as defining terms in the theory of modernity. However, recent art and cultural history have often spoken of plural modernities, distinct from the pattern set in France. For the first time, this study in cultural history explores how Spanish culture took a radical turn toward the medium of representation itself in the 1850s and early 1860s. It argues that this happened in a way that is critically at odds with many fundamental theoretical suppositions about modernity.
The four works collected in this volume reveal the fascinating preoccupations of the German Romantic movement, which revelled in the inexplicable, the uncanny and the unknown and, especially, the mysterious world of the fairy tale. Goethe's richly imaginative Fairy Tale (1795) depicts an ethereal underground realm and the marriage of a beautiful man and woman, whose union heralds a new age. In Tieck's Eckbert the Fair (1797) two outsiders seek refuge in the solitude of dark woods to conceal their incestuous passion from the world, while in Fouque's Undine (1811) a water nymph falls in love and acquires a soul, and so discovers the reality of human suffering. And Brentano's Tale of Honest Casper and Fair Annie (1817) portrays the tragedy of a young couple, destroyed by a false sense of honour and pride.
August Wilhelm Schlegel's translation of 'La devoción de la Cruz', part of a series of works by Calderón which he published between 1803 and 1809 under the title 'Spanisches Theater', was integral to the early German Romantic apotheosis of Golden Age Spain. The 1803 first edition of 'Die Andacht zum Kreuze' was warmly received by major writers including Goethe (who was privy to the manuscript prior to publication) and Schiller, as well as other early German Hispanists and translators such as Keil and Gries.
