The Widow

"The Widow" is the third novel by José de Alencar, published in serial form in the Diário do Rio de Janeiro between January and February of 1857. The first complete edition of the work was only published in 1860 by the Correio Mercantil printing press, when it was released in volume together with the second edition of "Five Minutes." The work depicts the customs of the Rio society of the time. Despite being considered written in the letter format, the author of the letter not only tells the story in the third person - having no participation in the events - but also exercises the function of an omniscient and omnipresent narrator. In 1844 Rio de Janeiro, two young people fall in love, Jorge and Carolina. Jorge was rich, the heir of a fortune left by his father, but upon taking possession of the wealth, he does not know how to manage it and loses everything in games and diversions. Bankrupted, his drama begins, marry Carolina or break the engagement? He marries her, but then he has another terrible decision: commit suicide. The story then advances five years and a new destiny emerges for the widow.

Transforming Clinical Research in the United States

An ideal health care system relies on efficiently generating timely, accurate evidence to deliver on its promise of diminishing the divide between clinical practice and research. There are growing indications, however, that the current health care system and the clinical research that guides medical decisions in the United States falls far short of this vision. The process of generating medical evidence through clinical trials in the United States is expensive and lengthy, includes a number of regulatory hurdles, and is based on a limited infrastructure. The link between clinical research and medical progress is also frequently misunderstood or unsupported by both patients and providers. The...

Harris & Harris' Radiology of Emergency Medicine

A comprehensive reference for emergency radiology and an unsurpassed source of practical information about imaging of the acutely ill and injured patients. While the focus remains on conventional, plain-film radiography--still the most commonly performed examinations in emergency and trauma settings--substantial coverage is given to MRI, CT (including for blunt abdominal & thoracic trauma), CT angiography (for lower & upper extremities and esp. for gunshot wounds) in the emergency dept., and ultrasound. This fifth edition--despite that it's been more than ten years since the fourth--remains the gold standard of texts on emergency radiology, with appeal both to radiologists and emergency medicine specialists.
