'A gripping narrative, strengthened by Wheeler's longstanding connection to the story' Financial Times 'Moving, angering' The Times In the 1970s and 1980s almost 5,000 haemophiliacs were infected with HIV or hepatitis C after being given contaminated NHS blood products. So far more than 2,800 people are known to have died in what has been described as the 'worst treatment disaster in the history of the NHS'. Sunday Times political editor Caroline Wheeler has been reporting on the scandal for two decades. She has been pivotal to the campaign for justice for the victims, whose stories form the heart of this book. As the long-running Infected Blood Inquiry delivers its final verdict Death in the Blood is an unforgettable epic of human suffering, loss and survival against the odds. 'Caroline has been so supportive to the victims and survivors of the NHS contaminated blood scandal. She has been an integral part of our long fight for justice and enabled people like me to speak out with confidence, when there was little confidence before' Ade Goodyear, former pupil at Treloar School

The Price of Greed

At midnight on June 28, 1944, four well-armed civilians attempted a daring armed robbery of the $4,329,000 Camp Lejeune payroll being transported under heavy guard from the First National Bank in the small Coastal Plain town of Kinston, North Carolina. The would-be hijackers were cut down in a hail of submachine gun fire. Taking this foiled attempt as a warning, a bold Marine Corps colonel and the avaricious bank manager set in motion an elaborate ruse to steal the $6,327,412 January 1945 payroll from the bank vault prior to its transfer. The audacious scheme was brilliantly planned and executed with precision. Lawmen were stymied. The only things standing in the way of complete success were the greed of the co-conspirators and an unforeseen encounter with someone not even associated with the heist.

It is 2009 and North Korea has purchased four outdated submarine launched ballistic missile boosters from a French company tasked with destroying the rockets. Because they are not a weapon in and of themselves, international law governing the sale of strategic weapons cannot prevent the acquisition. Both the US and Canadian governments however, know too well what the unstable North Korean leader intends for the rocket boosters in light of his failure to successfully launch a missile of his own. When a carefully planned covert mission to intercept the rockets unravels due to mechanical problems with the ultra quiet spy submarine USS Jimmy Carter, a replacement must be found and quickly! The s...

Unusual place names evoke a sense of mystery and wonder. How did a place come to be called "Barefoot" or "Battle Row"? Where in the world were the "Sycamore Forest" and "Blue Ball"? Researching these names often reveals fascinating stories about local history, families, events, and politics. Clark County, Kentucky is blessed with many such interesting places. The articles in this book are collected from a column in the Winchester Sun called "Where in the World?" Each article describes an historic place name in Clark County, some well known, some not so well known. The articles were written for the Bluegrass Heritage Museum in hopes of fostering an interest in local history and the museum. This book is intended to do the same. This work includes one hundred articles that appeared in the newspaper between January 6, 2005 and August 23, 2007. A few of the articles were updated for this publication when additional information became available.

Past and Promise

This unique book explores the lives and work of nearly 300 New Jersey women from the Colonial period to the present century. Included are biographies of notable, often nationally known individuals, as well as less celebrated people, whose vibrant personal stories illustrate the richness of women's experiences in New Jersey—and, really, in America—from 1600 to the present. Researched, written and illustrated by The Women's Project of New Jersey, this volume both recovers and re-tells the life stories of women who have helped shape our world. Past and Promise is a long-overdue celebration of the accomplishments of these individuals who succeeded, often against overwhelming odds. Past and P...
