R is for Rose

In R is for Rose, photographer, author and avid gardener Carolyn Parker takes us on a journey through the alphabet...with roses. Inspired by the beauty of 'Rouletii,' Parker formed a letter R with its flowers, leaves and branches, and soon a rose alphabet was born. The roses are photographed growing in Parker's own garden or in gardens she has visited around the world, and in stunning arrangements made by her own hand. Each rose shines with its own unique and intriguing beauty through her lens. Whether recounting the history of Hybrid Teas, interviewing renowned rosarian Graham Stuart Thomas, or describing the sound of 'Pristine' dropping her petals, Parker shares her love of roses in a deeply personal way. The stories of the history and life of each rose gives way to stories that reflect the history and life of each human being. Be it birth, death, creativity, or beauty, human concerns look thoughtfully different when viewed through the lens of a rose lover.

Opera is in many ways the most extraordinary artistic medium of the last four hundred years. Prohibitively expensive and patently unrealistic, it can nevertheless paint the human passions with astonishing power and drama. This book, the first new, full-length, single-volume history of opera for more than a generation provokes in-depth discussions of many works by the greatest opera composers, from Monteverdi, Handel and Mozart, to Verdi and Wagner, to Strauss, Puccini, Berg, and Britten. There are lively discussions of opera's social, political and literary background, its economic cicumstances and the almost continual polemics that have accompanied its development through the centuries. Co. E was part of Symon's Regiment, 1st Regiment, and commanded by Angus Morrison, recently Ordinary of our county. They went by rail from Thomasville to the sand walled artillery fort on the Great Ogeechee, protecting a vital railroad bridge, just upriver, from federal gunboats. Under the higher command of Gen. Lafayette McLaws and the post command of Major Anderson of nearby Lebanon Plantation, they faced Sherman's huge well armed forces who needed to punch through to obtain supplies from the federal fleet. Co. E had 47 men on duty when Sherman's much larger force attacked late on Dec. 13, 1864.

No delicate ingenues, these. In the middle of the twentieth century, the Mary Pickfords of the movie world were replaced by a different sort of woman--drop-dead gorgeous, witty, not afraid to speak their minds, they could slay you with a look--and if that didn't work, look out for the pistol in the garter. These ground-breaking actresses helped change the course of movie history, charting a path for generations to come. These profiles of fifteen leading ladies--Lucille Ball, Lynn Bari, Joan Blondell, Ann Dvorak, Gloria Grahame, Jean Hagen, Adele Jergens, Ida Lupino, Marilyn Maxwell, Mercedes McCambridge, Jane Russell, Ann Sheridan, Barbara Stanwyck, Claire Trevor and Marie Windsor--include overviews of their lives and careers, and excerpts from interviews. Five photos supplement each profile. Jane Russell (one of the actresses profiled) provides a foreword.
