Excerpt from The Register, or Rolls, of Walter Gray, Lord Archbishop of York: With Appendices of Illustrative Documents Walter gray, the register of whose official acts is here presented to the Surtees Society, was Archbishop of York from 1215 to 1255, and had a longer tenure of his exalted position than any of his predecessors or successors. It is a most rare occurrence in the annals of any branch of the Church for a prelate to wear the mitre for forty years.
