Para muchos, la masonería ha sido una sociedad secreta en la que se urden conspiraciones y se medra a la sombra del poder. Para otros, en España fue además una organización republicana, izquierdista y anticlerical. No obstante, la presencia de nobles en las logias, con su perfil supuestamente conservador, monárquico y católico, plantea una inquietante paradoja que se acentúa aún más si tenemos en cuenta que la masoneríapracticaba una fraternidad igualitaria que contribuyó a difundir los principios del liberalismo social, político y económico.
