Christian Heurich (1842-1945) was not only Washington D.C.'s most successful brewer, he was the world's oldest, with 90 years' experience. He walked across central Europe learning his craft, survived a shipboard cholera epidemic, recovered from malaria and worked as a roustabout on a Caribbean banana boat--all by age 30. Heurich lived most of his life in Washington, becoming its largest private landowner and opening the city's largest brewery. He won a "beer war" against his rivals and his beers won medals at World's Fairs. He was trapped in Europe while on vacation at the start of both World Wars, once sleeping through an air raid, and was accused of being a German spy plotting to assassinate Woodrow Wilson. A notably odd episode: when they began to tear down his old brewery to build the Kennedy Center, the wrecking ball bounced off the walls. Drawing on family papers and photos, the author chronicles Heurich's life and the evolving beer industry before and after Prohibition.

Advocacy Journalists

In all likelihood advocacy journalism is the oldest form of reportage. It appears frequently whenever journalists desire to advocate their beliefs or ideas about major political or social problems. In Advocacy Journalists: A Biographical Dictionary of Writers and Editors, Edd Applegate identifies the most notable figures in this field. Each entry contains biographical information about a writer or editor who either wrote advocacy journalism or edited one or more publications that featured such material. Entries consist of discussions of the journalists' lives, professional careers, major works, and, in some cases, commentary on those works. Among those profiled here are such notables as Ambr...

Katharine Graham¿s Way

Katharine Graham was suddenly forced to take charge of The Washington Post after her husband’s suicide. With no leadership training, she overcame timidity, mastered constant crises, and eventually made national history in journalism, business, and politics. In one lifetime, she experienced nearly all the pains and pleasures of self-renewal, American style. Here are the lessons from her experience that you can apply to your life and career. Katharine Graham’s story would probably make a bad movie, but it definitely made a good life. The movie would drag a poor little rich marionette through glib scenes of high living, low loving, suicide, and redemption--a Cinderella knockoff with a too-h...
