The Oxford Handbook of Attention
During the last three decades, there have been enormous advances in our understanding of the neural mechanisms of selective attention at the network as well as the cellular level. On March 31, 1929, seventy-seven men began an epic 3,554-mile footrace across America that pushed their bodies to the breaking point. Nicknamed the “Bunion Derby” by the press, this was the second and last of two trans-America footraces held in the late 1920s. The men averaged forty-six gut-busting miles a day during seventy-eight days of nonstop racing that took them from New York City to Los Angeles. The Resistors
The Resistors is a parallel sequel to 2018's The Kidnapped. It focuses on blacks, whites, and Native Americans resisting pre-Civil War oppression while attempting to establish dignified identities. It is also in the voice of Sarah, one of the author's direct ancestors. She was the daughter of Esi and Kofi two fictionalized Fante kidnapped from West Africa in 1795. With the help of Quakers, together with two brothers, Robin and Dan, Sarah escaped from being enslaved in Culpeper, Virginia and settled in Warren County, Ohio where she met and married the Scots-Irish Quaker, Charles Ferguson. It is imagined that Sarah was primarily educated by her father who himself was taught reading and writing by Nathan Prescott, his slave master, and secondarily through two years of education at Goose Creek Friends School, a Quaker school in Northern Virginia, renown for being integrated prior to Nat Turner's revolt which led to state laws forbidding the education of people of color.
Synthesis Techniques and Optimizations for Reconfigurable Systems
Synthesis Techniques and Optimization for Reconfigurable Systems discusses methods used to model reconfigurable applications at the system level, many of which could be incorporated directly into modern compilers. The book also discusses a framework for reconfigurable system synthesis, which bridges the gap between application-level compiler analysis and high-level device synthesis. The development of this framework (discussed in Chapter 5), and the creation of application analysis which further optimize its output (discussed in Chapters 7, 8, and 9), represent over four years of rigorous investigation within UCLA's Embedded and Reconfigurable Laboratory (ERLab) and UCSB's Extensible, Programmable and Reconfigirable Embedded SystemS (ExPRESS) Group. The research of these systems has not yet matured, and we continually strive to develop data and methods, which will extend the collective understanding of reconfigurable system synthesis.
