Charles Clifton Penick Papers
Most papers date before Penick was consecrated as bishop, and consist of correspondence with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. They concern his call to St. George's Church, Mount Savage, Maryland, 1871, and rectorship of the Church of the Messiah, Baltimore, which he organized, 1873-1877. Material regarding parish affairs; Penick's churchmanship; questions about the rubrics and liturgy; work of the Sunday School Association, of which Penick was secretary; his election as Bishop, 1877; opposition thereto, including Whittingham's withholding of consent; and his consecration. Correspondence with Bishop William Pinkney, 1880, concerns the Reverend R.H. Gibson, missionary in Liberia. A copy of a letter by Penick, 1904, describes the destruction of the Church of the Messiah in the Baltimore fire, discusses its history, and recounts his work there.

The Penick Family
The Penick/Penix/Pinick/Pinix family had settled in New Kent County, Virginia before 1686 when Edward was born. He and his wife, Elizabeth had at least three sons, Edward, William and John. Descendants lived in Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Alabama, Kansas, Missouri, Texas and elsewhere.
