'Charles R. Cross has got as close to the truth as anyone yet in his exhaustive and ground-breaking account of the life of the greatest guitarist in the history of rock.' Observer 'Superb' Sunday Telegraph Jimi Hendrix continues to fascinate, and sell huge quantities of albums, even 35 years after his death. Quite apart from his influence on musicians and fans, a large part of the appeal of his sensational life story lies in the thrill of the era whose values he came to stand for. The Sixties still exert a massive pull over pop culture and this is genuinely a book for anyone interested, not only in Hendrix but also in anything to do with the pop culture of the last 40 years. Meticulously researched and sensitively and beautifully written, this is a labour of love that reveals the nuances, foibles and tragedies of the human being behind the iconic image. This is the sweeping, authoritative and colourful biography that Jimi Hendrix and that his legions of fans, young and old deserves.

Cutting Point: Solving the Jack the Ripper and the Thames Torso Murders

In Victorian London, long before the term serial killer was coined, two series of murders played out that have captured the imagination of the whole world. The Jack the Ripper murders and the Thames Torso murders, so similar to each other, took place during the same period in London and have never been solved. In this book, journalist and researcher Christer Holmgren explains why the murders were never cleared up and names the East End carman Charles Lechmere as the culprit behind both series of murders. He was a man who claimed he found Jack the Ripper's first victim, but avoided to give his true name to the police. In the 2014 TV documentary The Missing Evidence -- Jack the Ripper, the cas...

Led Zeppelin retain one of the biggest followings of any band on the planet, even though it is decades since they were still together, touring and recording. Their one-off reunion at the O2 a couple of years ago was the hot gig ticket of the decade, and confirmed by those lucky enough to be there as the greatest gig they’d ever seen. The simultaneous Mothership CD reissue of their greatest hits reinforced the massive explosion of interest in them. This illustrated biography of the band – by top Hendrix and Kurt Cobain biographer Charles Cross – is a visually stunning record of the band’s tumultuous career: epic live photos, counterpointed by an informed, lively and trenchant text – and complemented by a rich range of facsimile memorabilia: set lists, concert posters, backstage passes. In the archaeology of rock music Led Zeppelin’s American tours of the early seventies, and their final giant Knebworth gig in 1975, have entered legend for their grandiosity, excess and sheer elemental force. They are fully commemorated in this volume, which every Led Zep aficionado will need to have.

Charles Edward of Saxe-Coburg

Charles Edward was ruler of the German Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, president of the German Red Cross, and the grandson of Queen Victoria. He was closely allied with the rise of Adolf Hitler and the implementation of eugenic policies designed to improve German racial health. When war began in 1939, Hitler ordered a secret program of murder by poison gas and starvation to eliminate the mentally and physically handicapped “ballast people”; approximately 250,000 people were eventually killed. Readers in medicine, law, sociology and history will be interested in this tragic story of a weak-willed, but powerful Nazi leader who facilitated this murderous program, even though one of his own relatives died in the “euthanasia” scheme. Although Charles Edward traveled to neutral countries during the war, he did nothing to broadcast the inhumane treatment of his own and thousands of other families whose relatives disappeared into the murder machine.
