Letters and official documents addressed to Charles Hawley Brantingham, 1860-1897, almost all related to his service in the Navy during the Civil War with the East Coast Blockading Squadron and elsewhere. The one exception, a letter from 1897, thanks him for business help and sends whisky and cigars. The Civil War letters, signed by many different writers, are all official letters, giving Brantingham orders, notifying him of promotions and transfers, or expressing willingness to act as a reference.

Letter, with McBlair's autograph endorsement signed on the verso. The letter, written on board the U.S.S. Marion at Porto Praya, Cape Verde, states that Hawley is ill with dyspepsia, does not believe he can recover on board, and wishes that a medical survey may be held in my case. McBlair's note on the next page, written on 3 May 1858, on board the U.S.S. Dale at Porto Praya, orders the medical examination to be held. Note on bottom of page states that Hawley passed; it is signed by Assistant Surgeons W. Sherman, R. J. Mason and H.W.M. Washington.

Brothers and Ghosts

A young woman, torn between two cultures, belonging to neither. A family, torn apart by a war they had no choice about. Kiều, calls herself Kim because it’s easier for Europeans to pronounce. She knows little about her Vietnamese family’s history until she receives a Facebook message from her estranged uncle in America, telling her that her grandmother is dying. Her father and uncle haven’t spoken since the end of the Vietnam War. One brother supported the Vietcong, while the other sided with the Americans. When Kiều and her parents travel to America to join the rest of the family in the California for the funeral, questions relating to their past — to what has been suppressed — resurface and demand to be addressed.
