Most of the documents in the collection pertain to Lyman's Civil War service (especially the 20th Connecticut Infantry). The collection includes Lyman's appointment and discharge papers from the 20th Connecticut Infantry, as well as pension papers and related correspondence. There are also 5 items related to special orders and a muster roll. The collection also includes copies of Lyman's obituary from the Des Moines Register and the Sioux City Journal.

Accompanying the diary are a typed, itemized account of Lyman's personal expenses (1 page); a transcribed Civil War letter written by J.C. Clargan (origin unknown); a 3 page genealogy of the Lyman-Fitch families; and a copy of the program from the memorial service for Charles Lyman, held at the Congregational Church in Alden, Iowa on July 23, 1905.
