The two-volume set LNCS 3032 and LNCS 3033 constitute the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Grid and Cooperative Computing, GCC 2003, held in Shanghai, China in December 2003. The 176 full papers and 173 poster papers presented were carefully selected from a total of over 550 paper submissions during two rounds of reviewing and revision. Since China began its open-door and reform policies in 1978, more than three million Chinese students have migrated to study abroad, and the United States has been their top destination. Adopting curriculum vitae (CV) analysis method, this book collects CVs of university faculty from 109 universities of "The Double First Class University Plan" in China, and systematically analyses the mobility pattern of faculty in China for the first time. Examining the overall mobility frequency of Chinese faculty and its growing rate, the authors predict that after the epidemic, with the growing number of returned overseas talents, there may be a third wave of faculty mobility. They demonstrate that East Asia, the United States and Europe are the main channels for the inward talent mobility to China, and there are significant differences in China’s faculty mobility among different regions, disciplines and genders, which deserves further investigation. Furthermore, they argue the influencing factors of faculty mobility between China and foreign countries are highly different too. Scholars and students of Chinese higher education, international and comparative education may find this book helpful, and benefit from the analysis framework of Push and Pull Theory as long as CV analysis method.
Chinese people have been instrumental in indigenizing Christianity. Sinizing Christianity examines Christianity's transplantation to and transformation in China by focusing on three key elements: Chinese agents of introduction; Chinese redefinition of Christianity for the local context; and Chinese institutions and practices that emerged and enabled indigenisation. As a matter of fact, Christianity is not an exception, but just one of many foreign ideas and religions, which China has absorbed since the formation of the Middle Kingdom, Buddhism and Islam are great examples. Few scholars of China have analysed and synthesised the process to determine whether there is a pattern to the ways in which Chinese people have redefined foreign imports for local use and what insight Christianity has to offer. China began opening to the outside world in 1978. This process was designed to remain under the state's control. But the relative value of goods and services inside and outside China drove cities, enterprises, local governments, andindividuals with comparative advantage in international transactions to seek global linkages. These contacts, David Zweig asserts, led to the deregulation of China's mercantilist regime. Through extensive field research, Zweig surveys the extraordinary changes in four sectors of China's domestic political economy: the establishment of developmentzones, rural joint ventures, the struggle over foreign aid and higher education.
