Green Development of Photoluminescent Carbon Dots

Carbon dots (CDs) as an emerging carbon nanomaterial have attracted considerable attention and have been widely used in numerous fields. When compared with semiconductor quantum dots and organic dyes, CDs have a low toxicity, good biocompatibility and good anti-photobleaching. These qualities give them the potential to be a greener optical probe than other types of quantum dots and organic dyes. Covering several common synthesis strategies, including biomass synthesis, large-scale synthesis and sustainable synthesis technology, this book focuses on the green synthesis of CDs and their applications in the fields of bioanalytical, catalytic, biomedical, and environmental sciences. It is a useful reference for anyone working in green chemistry, analytical chemistry, biomedical or environmental science.

An authority on creativity introduces us to AI-powered computers that are creating art, literature, and music that may well surpass the creations of humans. Today's computers are composing music that sounds “more Bach than Bach,” turning photographs into paintings in the style of Van Gogh's Starry Night, and even writing screenplays. But are computers truly creative—or are they merely tools to be used by musicians, artists, and writers? In this book, Arthur I. Miller takes us on a tour of creativity in the age of machines. Miller, an authority on creativity, identifies the key factors essential to the creative process, from “the need for introspection” to “the ability to discover...

Elastic Light Scattering Spectrometry

This book introduces the basics of light scattering and then presents theoretical methods and applications of elastic light scattering spectrometry in the field of analytical chemistry. Different elastic light scattering probes and how to use elastic light scattering probes for the analysis of inorganic ions, organic molecules, nucleic acids, proteins, biological microparticles, water and the atmospheric environment are discussed in detail.

Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention – MICCAI 2019

The six-volume set LNCS 11764, 11765, 11766, 11767, 11768, and 11769 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 22nd International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2019, held in Shenzhen, China, in October 2019. The 539 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 1730 submissions in a double-blind review process. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: Part I: optical imaging; endoscopy; microscopy. Part II: image segmentation; image registration; cardiovascular imaging; growth, development, atrophy and progression. Part III: neuroimage reconstruction and synthesis; neuroimage segmentation; diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging; functional neuroimaging (fMRI); miscellaneous neuroimaging. Part IV: shape; prediction; detection and localization; machine learning; computer-aided diagnosis; image reconstruction and synthesis. Part V: computer assisted interventions; MIC meets CAI. Part VI: computed tomography; X-ray imaging.

Biological and chemical warfare agents, including viruses, bacteria, and explosive and radioactive compounds, can induce illness or death in humans, animals, and plants. Plasmonic nanosensors as detection tools of these agents offer significant advantages, including rapid detection, sensitivity, selectivity, and portability. This book explores novel and updated research on different types of plasmonic nanosensors for analysis of biological and chemical threat agents. It covers a brief theory of plasmonic nanosensors, summarizes the state-of-art in the molecular recognition of biological and chemical threat agents, and describes the application of various types of nanosensors in the detection...

The Yijing and Chinese Politics

This book is the first comprehensive study of Yijing (Book of Changes) commentary during the Northern Song period, showing how it reflects a coming to terms with major political and social changes. Seen as a transitional period in China's history, the Northern Song (960–1127) is often described as the midpoint in the Tang-Song transition or as the beginning of Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism. Challenging this traditional view, Tze-ki Hon demonstrates the complexity of the Northern Song by breaking it into three periods characterized by, alternately, the reestablishment of civil governance, large-scale reforms, and a descent into factional rivalry. To illustrate the distinct characteristics of t...

Projecting A Nation

This is the first major work on pre-1949 Chinese cinema in English. As such, it represents a major contribution to existing discussions of both Chinese cinema and national cinema, and is an indispensible basic resource for scholars interested in Chinese film history. The book analyses the wide variety of conceptions of "Chinese national cinema" between the early years of the 20th century and 1949, and contrasts these to conceptions of national cinema in Europe and China. After years of exhausting primary historical research, the author has been able to bring to light sources hitherto not widely available. The author argues that questions and debates about the status and meaning of the "national" in "Chinese national cinema" are central to any consideration of cinema during this period, and addresses the issue of Chinese nationalism as part of a complex history of cinema within the early modern Chinese nation.
