Pictures from Home
First published in 1992 to wide critical acclaim, Pictures From Home is Larry Sultan's pendant to his parents. Sultan returned home to Southern California periodically in the 1980s and the decade-long sequence moves between registers, combining contemporary photographs with film stills from home movies, fragments of conversation, Sultan's own writings and other memorabilia. The result is a narrative collage in which the boundary between the documentary and the staged becomes increasingly ambiguous. Simultaneously the distance usually maintained between the photographer and his subjects also slips in an exchange of dialogue and emotion that is unique to this work. Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel
This richly illustrated publication chronicles for the first time the collaborative artwork by Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan. Their prolific artistic collaboration began in 1973 when they were both graduate students at the San Francisco Art Institute. During the course of the next twelve years, they created nineteen projects together.During this period their projects took the form of artists' books, How To Read Music In One Evening, 1974, and Evidence, 1977; a series of a dozen outdoor billboards in the form of hand painted photographs, silkscreen posters, oil paintings and digitally printed posters, 1973-1983; a film, JPL, 1980; and an installation, Newsroom, 1983.Although they both pursued individual projects during this twelve year span they nurtured and developed an intense and focused artist collaboration. Their seminal work, Evidence has been widely recognized as a landmark photographic book.
The Distance is Always Other
"Originally produced in 1973, the photographs were taken by two elderly American tourists, identified as Bob and Ann. They documented their road trip from Beirut to Baalbek in the Northeast of Lebanon....The couple used a basic stereo camera. Comprising of two fixed focus lenses it produced two images simultaneously offering a slight 'out of sync' viewpoint. The archive comprises vernacular images capturing the Lebanese landscape through various prisms: urban, domestic and exotic, revealing a country on the brink of civil war. Chris Coekin uncovered the archive, on line, in 2016. In collaboration with Noel Nasr they painstakingly pieced together the original route....revisiting the same locations photographed in 1973, attempting to replicate their identical visual perspective....Coekin and Nasr each used vintage fixed lens analogue cameras to capture their 'out of sync' simultaneous moments. The Altogether
The Altogether series of photographs were produced in a factory that began manufacturing copper wire in 1834. Unfortunately, the factory recently closed and the entire workforce was made redundant. The Altogether is a multi-layered project that investigates the notions of art, work and struggle. The book comprises three series of images: staged portraits of the workers, interior pseudo-landscapes and still life's of found manual tools.
