International Don Quixote
Ever since its appearance, Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote has exerted a powerful influence on the artistic imagination all around the world. This cross-cultural volume offers important new readings of canonical reinterpretations of the Quixote: from Unamuno to Borges, from Ortega y Gasset to Calvino, from Mark Twain to Carlos Fuentes. But to the prestigious list of well-known authors who acknowledged Cervantes' influence, it also adds new and surprising names, such as that of Subcomandante Marcos, who gives a Cervantine twist to his Mexican Zapatista revolution. Om de publieke opinie tegen slavenhandel en slavernij te keren, namen voormalige slaven soms zelf het woord. In het Engelse taalgebied verschenen ervan af de late achttiende eeuw tientallen autobiografieën van ex-slaven. Een deel van deze teksten werd, in vertaling, ook in Nederland uitgegeven, zelfs tot ver na de afschaffing van de slavernij. Marijke Huisman volgt de sporen van een aantal slaven autobiografieën door Groot-Brittannië, de Verenigde Staten en Nederland. Zij onderzoekt de rol die deze getuigenissen speelden in de productie van kennis over slavernij en het slavernijverleden. Het resultaat is een boeiende interpretatie geschiedenis die begint in 1789 bij de anti-slavernijbeweging en via onder meer de Aprilbeweging, de Harlem Renaissance, Black Power, de tweede feministische golf en de 'canon wars' voert naar actuele debatten over de omgang met het koloniale slavernijverleden ende 'slavernij' van moslimvrouwen.
