" The contributions in this volume deal with influences of Reformators and of the Reformation as a whole on the contemporary and following intellectual-cultural and especially pedagogical developments in selected countries in Central and Eastern Europe. The issues of which way pedagogical ideas of the Reformation spread internationally are questioned and problematised, and the people who played a role in this process are addressed. It also investigates which Protestant educational institutions, foundations, etc. exist today, and whether lines of tradition go back to the origins, or were re-animated in the last years. Additionally, it deals with aspects of the reception of Luther and Melanchthon in international pedagogical historiography. The contributions of the 30 authors from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Hungary, and Germany are connected to the discussion of the relationship of tradition and innovation in times of social upheaval. For the last few decades, historiography, considered as the central discipline of musicology, has explored new directions and sought inspiration for further research, consequently redefining the fundamental premises of historical musicology. The driving force of the dynamic development of world legal history in the past few centuries, with the dominance of the West, was clearly the demands of modernisation – transforming existing reality into what is seen as modern. The need for modernisation, determining the development of modern law, however, clashed with the need to preserve cultural identity rooted in national traditions. With selected examples of different legal institutions, countries and periods, the authors of the essays in the two volumes Modernisation, National Identity and Legal Instrumentalism: Studies in Comparative Legal History, vol. I: Private Law and Modernisation, National Identity and Legal Instrumentalism: Studies in Comparative Legal History, vol. II: Public Law seek to explain the nature of this problem. The end of World War I in 1918 meant a radical transformation of Central Europe: the multicultural space of former empires became divided into individual nation-states. This altered all spheres of life, deeply impacting the discipline of art history as well. The cosmopolitan vision of art history developed by figures from the Vienna School such as Franz Wickhoff and Alois Riegl was gradually replaced by new self-referential narratives. This nationalist tendency was reinforced by the division of Europe after World War II. In the wake of Jiří Kroupa’s pioneering studies, this volume takes a truly transcultural approach to art produced in the Central European region from the 12th to the 20th century. Freed from national prejudices, a region shaped by the constant movement of people, ideas, and objects emerges.
The book analyses the collective career of the artistic profession in Brno and Vilnius and the necessity to copy the behavior of the elites of the Old Regime. The "noble" values, which shaped the artistic careers in the 19th century press, were charity, good taste, cosmopolitism and patriotism. The newspaper discourse disposed potential to integrate and to smuggle novelties by exposing old values.
