Wittenberg Meets the World

Proposes creative implications of the 500-year Reformation tradition for today As the global church assesses the legacy of the Lutheran Reformation, Alberto Garcia and John Nunes in this book reimagine central Reformational themes from black, Hispanic, and other perspectives traditionally at the margins of catholic-evangelical communities. Focusing on the central theme of justification, Garcia and Nunes delve into three interlinked aspects of the church's life in the world martyria(witness), diakonia(service), andkoino nia(fellowship). They argue that it is critically important and vitally enriching for the whole church, especially Eurocentric Protestant churches, to learn from the grassroots theological emphases of Christian communities in the emerging world."

"Meant for More is uniquely sacramental-namely, that God's promise is effective "in, with, and under" ordinary means, including the Word of God. The tone will be written in a winsome and accessible way, yet it will be firmly grounded within the theology of the cross. Includes full-color graphics"--

The Sacralization of Time

In this book, João Nunes de Almeida rethinks the relationship between crisis and fascism in today’s liberal democratic societies. Arguing that fascism has adapted to a post-modern idea of endless crisis, Almeida challenges one of the strongest liberal myths in western politics, namely that fascism and liberal democracy have different roots. Fascism, in Almeida’s view, is at the center of the very production of social relations in western capitalist societies, and is the result of the very desire to be saved from crisis underlying liberal democracy. It draws on stormy examples from Portugal’s contemporary history, with a particular focus on its fascist past and revolution, to explore affinities between crisis and fascism in other spatial and historical contexts. João Nunes de Almeida concludes that refusing to be saved from crisis becomes the refusal of any form of fascism in a more global context.

Furthermore, it covers Latin, Arabic, Jewish, Byzantine and vernacular philosophy, and includes entries on the cross-fertilization of these philosophical traditions. A unique feature of this encyclopedia is that it does not aim to define what Renaissance philosophy is, rather simply to cover the philosophy of the period between 1300 and 1650.

Jews in the Canary Islands

In 1492, the Jews of Spain were given a choice: convert to Christianity or be expelled from Spain. Many chose to hide themselves as 'New Christians, ' or conversos, outwardly professing to be Christians while practicing their true faith in secret. In 1504, the Office of the Inquisition was set up in the remote Spanish holdings on the Canary Islands to seek out crypto-Jews, sorcerers, and other heretics. Jews in the Canary Islands is a calendar of Jewish cases brought before the Canariote Inquisition between 1499 and 1818, when the Inquisition was discontinued. First published in 1926, together with an introduction analysing the work of the Inquisition and explaining its relation to general Jewish history until 1928, this is a fascinating collection of records showing not only the workings of the Inquisition, but the lives of crypto-Jews during a time of fierce repression.
