Malay Words and Malay Things
The book traces the development of German acquaintance with the Malayan world and language as reflected in publications up to 1700. Beginning with a perusal of earliest cartographic renderings and a recapitulation of economic and political circumstances of German involvement in European Far-Eastern trade after 1500, the volume proceeds to systematically inspect 16th and 17th century German travellers' memoirs and translations of foreign sources. Relevant text passages are quoted in the original with English gloss. Citations of renderings of Malay items are accompanied by transliterations in modern spelling. Ultimate and intermediate sources and the routes by which various items reached the German public are followed, as well as virtual networks of information. Etymologies of numerous real or assumed Malayisms are elaborately reinspected, and corrected where necessary. The development in usage of the acquired Malayisms after 1700, reconstructed from entries in dictionaries and encyclopaedias and through direct quotation from German literature, is shown to reflect fluctuations in public attention towards features from exotic regions.

At the height of its power and influence in the seventeenth and eighteenth century the VOC - acronym for the United Netherland East India Company - was the greatest commercial concern in the world. The scope of its activities extended from the Cape of Good Hope to Japan. In some aspects, the Baltic trade and the North Sea fisheries were of more fundamental relevance for the economy of the Lowlands. But it was the more spectacular East Indian trade which aroused the admiration and the envy of foreigners, sometimes to the point of war. In this bibliography several topics are covered. Print culture, in both its material and cognitive aspects, has been a somewhat neglected field of Middle Eastern intellectual and social history. Historical Method and Confessional Identity in the Era of the Reformation (1378-1615)
This volume deals with the basic problem of how theologians of all confessions handled ancient, mainly Christian, history in the Reformation era. The author argues that far from being a mere tool of religious controversy, history was used throughout the 16th century to express profound religious and theological convictions and that historians and theologians of different confessions sought to define their religious identity by recourse to a particular historical method. By carefully comparing the types of historical documents produced by Calvinist, Lutheran and Roman Catholic circles, she throws a new light on patristic editions and manuals, the Centuries of Magdeburg, the Ecclesiastical Annals of Caesar Baronius and various collections of New Testament Apocrypha.
