Clayton

Chartered in 1869, Clayton traces its roots to Hinton's Quarter, Johnston Liberty Meeting House, Roxboro, Gulley's Store, and Stallings Station, and owes its existence to the North Carolina Railroad, completed in 1856. By 1890, several citizens amassed fortunes in cotton, lumber, merchandising, and textile manufacturing, and the town was recognized as the nation's wealthiest municipality of its size. Nationally and internationally known natives, including Dartmouth professor Herman H. Horne, historian and diplomat William E. Dodd, Baptist stalwart John E. White, architect Douglas Ellington, and pioneer aviator Eric Ellington, gave the town additional notoriety in the early 20th century. This glimpse into Clayton from the 1850s to 1946 introduces those who transformed a rural hamlet into America's "richest little town." When economic depression wiped out fortunes in the 1920s and 1930s, the town's greatest assets--strong families, churches, schools, and community spirit--remained intact.

Bad Seeds

This book tells the story of the Galloway Boys, who as young teens banded together in an urban-blighted area of Toronto's east end to sell drugs and run guns. They were led by Tyshan Riley, born into one of the toughest neighborhoods in Canada and raised by an often absent and erratic mother. He learned his lessons on the streets-how to sell drugs, how to steal--and used violence to get the money, sex and respect that he lived for. The area known as Galloway is home to 186 hectares of public housing. Crossing bridges is the only route into the area. It created a sense of isolation and for those who lived there a sense of mistrust of anyone from the outside. The area was a fertile ground for ...

In this book, authors who are experts in their fields describe current advances on commercial crops and key enabling technologies that will underpin future advances in biotechnology. They discuss state of the art discoveries as well as future challenges. Tremendous progress has been made in introducing novel genes and traits into plant genomes since the first creation of transgenic plants thirty years ago, and the first commercialization of genetically modified maize in 1996. Consequently, cultivation of biotech crops with useful traits has increased more than 100-fold from 1.7 million hectares in 1996 to over 175 million hectares globally in 2013. This achievement has been made possible by ...

Fixing Capitalism is a book describing Networked Capitalism, the only existing theory for creating a truly stable competitive economy that works for every person in the world. The theory begins with the conclusion that the fatal flaw in the economy is that money is a limited commodity. A limited supply of money to pay for everything creates limited production and limited consumption. It also creates instability in the economy as people decide to spend their money and encourage production or withhold their money and starve production. If we mediate exchange with an unlimited commodity, like information, the economy will be able to produce as many goods and services as the environment can sustainably support.
