The Impact of Economic Freedom on State Legitimacy

Christoph Michael Hindermann uses a statistical approach to analyze the impact of economic freedom on state legitimacy. Based on multiple regression models, the author not only extracts the determinants of legitimacy but also shows that rule of law is the most important area of economic freedom for legitimacy. In addition, the results also indicate that democracies are not necessarily more legitimate than autocracies and that wealthier countries are, ceteris paribus, perceived as less legitimate. Due to the strong quantitative approach, this thesis contributes not only to the political theory of liberalism and to the field of institutional economics but also enriches the debate on how a legitimate state ought to be.

The Belt and Road Initiative is an unparalleled China-initiated international infrastructure project. Since its launch, international trade has already increased in the participating countries - a trend that is only there to stay. However, this development is not seen only in a positive light, and to date it is unclear whether it will exclusively benefit the participating countries in the long term or whether it will drag them into debt. In this piece, we investigate possible trade effects that go beyond the proclaimed monetary ones. We check if these projected increases of trade (trade volume and trade freedom) affect mean levels of subjective well-being (SWB) in Asian countries. Applying a...

The Big Myth

"A carefully researched work of intellectual history, and an urgently needed political analysis." --Jane Mayer “[A] scorching indictment of free market fundamentalism ... and how we can change, before it's too late.”-Esquire, Best Books of Winter 2023 The bestselling authors of Merchants of Doubt offer a profound, startling history of one of America's most tenacious--and destructive--false ideas: the myth of the "free market." In their bestselling book Merchants of Doubt, Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway revealed the origins of climate change denial. Now, they unfold the truth about another disastrous dogma: the “magic of the marketplace.” In the early 20th century, business elites, ...

Based on Social Identity Theory (SIT), this paper analyzes whether state employees (in-group) have higher state legitimacy beliefs than employees working in the private sector (out-group). Using the fifth and the sixth waves of the World Values Survey and using a legitimacy measure that is based on Norris (1999), multi-level analyses provide evidence in favor of our hypothesis. State employees show significantly higher state legitimacy beliefs than employees working in the private sector. However, it remains unclear whether this effect is driven by social comparisons (SIT) or is simply a result of labor market selection mechanisms.

In the context of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), we review selected studies that explicitly or implicitly address the question of whether there occurs synchronization of stock markets between China and the BRI economies. Following this, we examine the extent to which this synchronization of stock markets may be driven by bilateral trade. This question is of particular interest to investors who wish to profit from the BRI while minimizing their risk through portfolio diversification. Our results show that there is plenty of supporting evidence that the stock markets of China and the BRI economies are synchronized, and that synchronization appears to be increasing since the launch of the BRI. We also find that bilateral trade is an important determinant for explaining stock market integration between China and the BRI countries. Based on these results, interregional diversification appears to be less efficient. Further research is needed to determine whether other forms of diversification, such as inter-industry diversification, would be more beneficial.
