In this ambitious book, Girard employs the latest tools of the historian's craft, multi-archival research in particular, and applies them to the climactic yet poorly understood last years of the Haitian Revolution. Haiti lost most of its archives to neglect and theft, but a substantial number of documents survive in French, U.S., British, and Spanish collections, both public and private. In all, this book relies on contemporary military, commercial, and administrative sources drawn from nineteen archives and research libraries on both sides of the Atlantic.

Le Chevalier de Fréminville (1787-1848) fut " un personnage des plus curieux et d'une grande originalité ". A la vie rude du marin et à la vie sérieuse du savant, il ajouta celle plus frivole de " femme " du monde. Après l'expédition de Saint-Domingue, il fait campagne dans les mers polaires, navigua dans la Baltique, aborda les côtes d'Afrique et celles d'Amérique. Il fut témoin de la traite des Noirs, de la fièvre jaune, de la révolte des esclaves à Saint-Domingue... se mêla de politique, et vécu une histoire d'amour insolite avec une belle créole des Saintes. Eugène Herpin s'est inspiré des Mémoires de Christophe Paulin de la Poix, chevalier de Fréminville, dit " la chevalière " pour rédiger cet étonnant récit haut en couleurs !
The Antiquarians of the Nation
In the nineteenth century, the search for the artistic, architectural and written monuments promoted by the French State with the aim to build a unified nation transcending regional specificities, also fostered the development of local or regional identitary consciousness. In Roussillon, this distinctive consciousness relied on a basically cultural concept of nation epitomised mainly by the Catalan language – Roussillon being composed of Catalan counties annexed to France in 1659. In The Antiquarians of the Nation, Francesca Zantedeschi explores how the works of Roussillon's archaeologists and philologists, who retrieved and enhanced the Catalan specificities of the region, contributed to the early stages of a ‘national’ (Catalan) cultural revival, and galvanised the implicit debate between (French) national history and incipient regional studies.
