Class-tested and coherent, this textbook teaches classical and web information retrieval, including web search and the related areas of text classification and text clustering from basic concepts. It gives an up-to-date treatment of all aspects of the design and implementation of systems for gathering, indexing, and searching documents; methods for evaluating systems; and an introduction to the use of machine learning methods on text collections. All the important ideas are explained using examples and figures, making it perfect for introductory courses in information retrieval for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in computer science. Based on feedback from extensive classroom experience, the book has been carefully structured in order to make teaching more natural and effective. Slides and additional exercises (with solutions for lecturers) are also available through the book's supporting website to help course instructors prepare their lectures.
Statistical approaches to processing natural language text have become dominant in recent years. This foundational text is the first comprehensive introduction to statistical natural language processing (NLP) to appear. The book contains all the theory and algorithms needed for building NLP tools. It provides broad but rigorous coverage of mathematical and linguistic foundations, as well as detailed discussion of statistical methods, allowing students and researchers to construct their own implementations. The book covers collocation finding, word sense disambiguation, probabilistic parsing, information retrieval, and other applications.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic disease leading to severe visual deterioration and impairment of daily life. Two types of AMD are distinguished: Wet or neovascular AMD and dry AMD. Dry AMD is characterized by drusen (small yellowish retinal deposits) and atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE); causal treatment is currently not available. Wet AMD is marked by abnormal growth of blood vessels within the macular area (spot of sharpest sight) leading to fluid accumulation (edema) and retinal bleeding as well as scar formation. If the disease is not treated severe irreversible visual impairment will result. Treatment with new agents that are administered intravitreally and act against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are now available, impeding disease progression in many cases. The present book gives a comprehensive overview about all aspects of AMD, useful for affected patients and interested readers and covers causes, epidemiological facts, diagnostics (emphasizing the topic optical coherence tomography-OCT) and treatment strategies of the disease, based on extensive literature research.

This volume provides an up-to-date survey of the field of corpus linguistics, a field whose methodology has revolutionized much of the empirical work done in most fields of linguistic study over the past decade. Corpus linguistics investigates human language by starting out from large collections of texts - spoken, written, or recorded. These language corpora, which are now regularly available in electronic form, are the basis for quantitative and qualitative research on almost any question of linguistic interest. Many techniques that are in use in corpus linguistics today are rooted in the tradition of the late 18th and 19th century, when linguistics began to make use of mathematical and em...
Mind and Body in Early China critiques Orientalist accounts of early China as a radical "holistic" other, which saw no qualitative difference between mind and body. Drawing on knowledge and techniques from the sciences and digital humanities, Edward Slingerland demonstrates that seeing a difference between mind and body is a psychological universal, and that human sociality would be fundamentally impossible without it. This book has implications for anyone interested in comparative religion, early China, cultural studies, digital humanities, or science-humanities integration.
