A Mathematician and His Mathematical Work

This volume is about the life and work of Shiing-Shen Chern (1911-), one of the leading mathematicians of this century. The book contains personal accounts by some friends, together with a summary of the mathematical works by Chern himself. Besides a selection of the mathematical papers the book also contains all his papers published after 1988.

Integrable Systems, Geometry, and Topology

The articles in this volume are based on lectures from a program on integrable systems and differential geometry held at Taiwan's National Center for Theoretical Sciences. As is well-known, for many soliton equations, the solutions have interpretations as differential geometric objects, and thereby techniques of soliton equations have been successfully applied to the study of geometric problems. The article by Burstall gives a beautiful exposition on isothermic surfaces and theirrelations to integrable systems, and the two articles by Guest give an introduction to quantum cohomology, carry out explicit computations of the quantum cohomology of flag manifolds and Hirzebruch surfaces, and give...

Structurally Stable Quadratic Vector Fields

This book solves a problem that has been open for over 20 years--the complete classification of structurally stable quadratic vector fields modulo limit cycles. The authors give all possible phase portraits for such structurally stable quadratic vector fields. No index. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Tight and Taut Submanifolds

First published in 1997, this book contains six in-depth articles on various aspects of the field of tight and taut submanifolds and concludes with an extensive bibliography of the entire field. The book is dedicated to the memory of Nicolaas H. Kuiper; the first paper is an unfinished but insightful survey of the field of tight immersions and maps written by Kuiper himself. Other papers by leading researchers in the field treat topics such as the smooth and polyhedral portions of the theory of tight immersions, taut, Dupin and isoparametric submanifolds of Euclidean space, taut submanifolds of arbitrary complete Riemannian manifolds, and real hypersurfaces in complex space forms with special curvature properties. Taken together these articles provide a comprehensive survey of the field and point toward several directions for future research.

Time-Dependent Subdifferential Evolution Inclusions and Optimal Control

This volume studies multivalued evolution equations driven by time-dependent subdifferential operators and optimal control problems for such systems. The formulation is general enough to incorporate problems with time varying constraints. For evolution inclusions, existence relaxation and structural results for the solution set are proved. For optimal control problems, a general existence theory is developed, different forms of the relaxed problem are introduced and studied, well-posedness properties are investigated and the precise relation between the properties of relaxability and well-posedness is established. Various examples of systems which fit in the abstract framework are analysed.

Dynamical Zeta Functions, Nielsen Theory and Reidemeister Torsion

In the paper we study new dynamical zeta functions connected with Nielsen fixed point theory. The study of dynamical zeta functions is part of the theory of dynamical systems, but it is also intimately related to algebraic geometry, number theory, topology and statistical mechanics. The paper consists of four parts. Part I presents a brief account of the Nielsen fixed point theory. Part II deals with dynamical zeta functions connected with Nielsen fixed point theory. Part III is concerned with analog of Dold congruences for the Reidemeister and Nielsen numbers. In Part IV we explain how dynamical zeta functions give rise to the Reidemeister torsion, a very important topological invariant which has useful applications in knots theory, quantum field theory and dynamical systems.

Diagram Groups

Diagram Groups

Diagram groups are groups consisting of spherical diagrams (pictures) over monoid presentations. They can be also defined as fundamental groups of the Squier complexes associated with monoid presentations. The authors show that the class of diagram groups contains some well-known groups, such as the R. Thompson group F. This class is closed under free products, finite direct products, and some other group-theoretical operations. The authors develop combinatorics on diagrams similar to the combinatorics on words. This helps in finding some structure and algorithmic properties of diagram groups. Some of these properties are new even for R. Thompson's group F. In particular, the authors describe the centralizers of elements in F, prove that it has solvable conjugacy problems, etc.
