Definitions of space are as diverse as the disciplines in which it plays a fundamental role; from science and philosophy to art and architecture, each field’s perception of space is often simplified or reduced. This consequently denies access to ‘new spaces’, whose definitions and perspectives, strategies and impacts on human perception are rarely considered in any cohesive manner. Architect of Letters
News on Ludwig Hilberseimer! Ludwig Hilberseimer (1885–1967) is regarded as one of the leading theorists of the Neues Bauen movement in pre-War Germany, and of modern, functional urbanism. This set of accomplishments still dominates the public image of the architect, urban planner, teacher and art critic to this day. His development beyond that period has long been neglected. The essays in this collection seek to fill this gap, offering an exciting and wide-ranging new perspective on the work of a central protagonist of modernism. Until now, most critical studies of Hilberseimer's work came from his place of exile in Chicago and his work in Germany/Europe and the USA tended to be viewed separately; this volume is the first to attempt to end this separation and encourage a complete overview of is work. Dance and Modernism in Irish and German Literature and Culture
A collection of scholarly articles and essays by dancers and scholars of ethnochoreology, dance studies, drama studies, cultural studies, literature, and architecture, Dance and Modernism in Irish and German Literature and Culture: Connections in Motion explores Irish-German connections through dance in choreographic processes and on stage, in literary texts, dance documentation, film, and architecture from the 1920s to today. The contributors discuss modernism, with a specific focus on modern dance, and its impact on different art forms and discourses in Irish and German culture. Within this framework, dance is regarded both as a motif and a specific form of spatial movement, which allows for the transgression of medial and disciplinary boundaries as well as gender, social, or cultural differences. Part 1 of the collection focuses on Irish-German cultural connections made through dance, while part 2 studies the role of dance in Irish and German literature, visual art, and architecture.
Inflection 06: Originals
Architects are expected to create original ideas resulting in a unique, bespoke design. With the rise of Modern Architecture, originality became ingrained in perceptions of good design. As a result, originality has become a barometer against which we measure the value of design. However technology today allows for ease of replication and copies, thus originality in design has become an ostensibly hollow prospect. Originals gathers a wide range of responses, varied in their opinions and approaches to originality and authorship in design and architecture. Inflection is a student-run design journal based at the Melbourne School of Design, University of Melbourne. Born from a desire to stimulate debate and generate ideas, it advocates the discursive voice of students, academics and practitioners. Founded in 2013, Inflection is a home for provocative writing—a place to share ideas and engage with contemporary discourse.
Living the Modern
Since the nineteen-fifties, a unique form of modern architecture has been developing in Australia-a "progressive modernism," which involves the dynamic combination of tradition and transformation. This catalogue accompanies the exhibition Living the Modern_Australian Architecture, and analyzes this culture- and environment-specific architecture, using its residential constructions as a basis for examination. The scope of the book extends from detached family houses to high-rise buildings. Examples of early design from the post-war period are explored in an introductory overview, but the focus of the publication is directed towards a diverse mix of twenty-five Australian architects. For the last fifteen years, they have been applying, interpreting, or reworking modernist approaches, but despite fame in their homeland, their outstanding and refreshing productions remain largely unheard of in Europe. Japanese Horror and the Transnational Cinema of Sensations undertakes a critical reassessment of Japanese horror cinema by attending to its intermediality and transnational hybridity in relation to world horror cinema. Neither a conventional film history nor a thematic survey of Japanese horror cinema, this study offers a transnational analysis of selected films from new angles that shed light on previously ignored aspects of the genre, including sound design, framing techniques, and lighting, as well as the slow attack and long release times of J-horror’s slow-burn style, which have contributed significantly to the development of its dread-filled cinema of sensations.

Die Zeitschrift ist zwischen1930 und 1932 in Dessau und Berlin in 15 hektografierten Nummern in einer losen Blattsammlung erschienenen und wird hier erstmalig von Forschenden aus der Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaft, Architektur und Editionswissenschaft kritisch diskutiert. Deutlich wird, dass die experimentelle Bedeutung des Bauhauses von politischer Radikalität nicht zu trennen ist.
