In The Melancholy of Anatomy, his ninth collection of poetry, Martin Corless-Smith turns his attention towards ageing and mortality, and in particular to the death of his father. Shifting between formal verse and prose, from the metaphysical to the whimsical, from surreal to anecdotal, the book moves between poetic articulations as a mind might through memories, sifting to find anything to hold on to as everything flows and falls away. At times melancholic at times nihilistic at times luminous and dark, this collection asks questions about poetry, memory and what it is to have loved and lived. Praise for The Fool and The Bee: "Corless-Smith has an extraordinary eye for detail and this meticu...

Complete Later Poems, 1923-1938

César Vallejo is one the greatest Spanish-language poets of the 20th century, his monument being the book-length sequence 'Trilce' (a translation of which is published simultaneously with this volume). After the publication of 'Trilce' he published numerous essays and a didactic novel, but did not collect any of his subsequent poems for book publication. Since his death, these poems have usually been referred to as the Posthumous Poems or, collectively, as the 'Poemas humanos' after the title of one of the posthumous collections. This volume brings together all of the post-'Trilce' work that has been identified by the latest scholarship and included in the most recent Peruvian edition of the author's works. The Spanish texts have benefitted from a number of corrections, as compared to previous publications, and the poems are presented chronologically - in so as far as the chronology can be ascertained. The book offers the most complete version yet of this magnificent body of work. The translations are by the award-winning Irish poet-translator, Michael Smith, and the Peruvian scholar Valentino Gianuzzi.

Anna Mendelssohn (1948-2009) authored poetry, fiction, drama, and life writing; she was also a visual artist, musician, and translator. From the early 1980s, Mendelssohn composed 19 poetry collections and published in journals receptive to her experimental, charged lyrics, and retained a marginal, if constant, presence in the poetry community.

Poetry. "Offense given; offense taken. Betrayals remembered and the betrayers unforgiven. Kent Johnson's mordant poems burn away the scrimshaw, the lace-making, the dreck that passes for poetry today, exposing the hypocrisy of our official poetry culture where a cadre of pampered bourgeoisie imagine themselves enlightened revolutionaries, and the poetics of the avant-garde has congealed into a set of implicit rules more formulaic than the traditions it seeks to supplant. A book like this is rare and necessary in every age. Let the refiner's fire break forth, lest universal darkness bury all."--James Chapson "Kent Johnson is an avant-garde poet without an avant-garde...[He is] an antidote to the sentimental courtesies and complacencies that prevent a conversation about what and where poetry might be from soon beginning."--Keith Tuma "[Kent] Johnson's poems are like unchained pit bulls tossed into a school yard--somebody is going to get bit. But you almost have to admire all that taut muscle & those unstoppable jaws."--Ron Silliman

Poetry. Explains Janet Holmes: "If you write out 'The Poems of Emily Dickinson' and erase some of the letters very neatly and precisely, you can get to THE MS OF M Y KIN—the manuscript of my kin, as it were; the manuscript of my family. It might also be said to be the manuscript of my kind." "If Ronald Johnson had an epic (Paradise Lost) to erase in creating his masterwork, RADI OS, then Janet Holmes has chosen a more difficult task, namely that of erasing from the most compressed poetry there is. Emily Dickinson's poems come to us so nearly pre-erased that their further erasure by Holmes dramatically frees instances of prophecy, voices from 1861-62 rediscovered in contemporary political discourse. It seems that the best of the embeds in Iraq was Emily Dickinson; read her reports from the (af)front here"—Susan M. Schultz.
