Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity in Childhood and Adolescence

Despite the fact that the prevalence of obesity in early childhood has been stable and is no longer increasing in many developed and industrialized countries, the incidence of both obesity and full-blown metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents is still very high. Obesity is a major disease burden in all societies and needs to be prevented early in life. New approaches are eagerly sought and absolutely necessary. This book presents a comprehensive and state-of-the-art summary of current and new knowledge in this critical field. Crucial issues such as nutrition and genetics are described in detail. In addition, new ideas such as e-health and the consequences of urban living conditions are explored. Last but not least, modern treatment concepts and prevention even at an early age are competently discussed. Offering a valuable update on new developments in obesity research and the treatment in children and adolescents, this book is essential reading for all pediatricians and health-care professionals who look after young patients on a regular basis.

It provides the reader with the most up-to-date information about all the progresses that have been made and that have led to the clarification of the pathogenesis of all the forms of diabetes. From pathogenesis to novelty in therapy, the book will cover all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment also discussing rare forms of early onset diabetes, insulin therapy, pump therapy and technologies, acute and chronic complications. The volume is enhanced by videos showing the impact of treatments on movement difficulties, psychomotor development, and muscle tone. Slide decks with key messages are also available for download and usage during congresses and lessons. This book will be of benefit to pediatricians, endocrinologists, neonatologists and all physicians who deal with neonates affected by this disease

These guidelines make recommendations regarding the management of individuals with a body mass index greater than 25.0 kg/m2 and cover all age groups, from children to the elderly, as well as various patient subsets. A range of measures to yield health benefits are set out, including healthy eating plans, increased physical activity, and behavioral modifications to help patients to manage obesity. In addition, recommendations are made on the use of bariatric surgery and the new antiobesity drugs. Throughout the process of developing the recommendations, every attempt was made to ensure use of a rigorous, evidence-based approach. The guidelines are promoted by the Italian Society of Obesity (SIO) and were formulated in compliance with a prespecified process overseen by a steering committee. They are intended for use by a wide range of clinicians, including general practitioners, primary health care nurses, and primary health care professionals, and will hopefully prove of value in combating the obesity epidemic not only in Italy but across Europe and elsewhere in the world.

Primary Prevention by Nutrition Intervention in Infancy and Childhood

The 57th Nestlé Pediatric Nutrition Workshop assembled a panel of leading international scientists in order to assess and extend the current state of knowledge on the long-term effects of early nutrition. Prevention of diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, cancer and the metabolic syndrome, by early nutrition intervention is the declared goal of this kind of research. Single papers deal with dietary effects on mental and motor impairment, the epidemical aspects of obesity, the complexity of the relationship between birth weight and adult BMI, the importance for primary prevention in childhood diabetes, the potential of nutritional prevention of osteoporosis, the nutritional key influences on cancer, and the surprising link between cancer and obesity, and many more. Complex, multifaceted and contradictory health outcomes of early nutrition elements clearly show that genetic or environmental interactions have to be taken into account, and compromises have to be found to establish a good balance of risks and benefits for the wide range of different health issues which depend on nutrition and early nutrition in particular.

Child and Adolescent Obesity

This book addresses the ever increasing problem of obesity in children and adolescents, the long-term health and social problems that arise from this, and approaches to prevention and management. Aimed at doctors, and all health-care professionals, it will be of interest to all those concerned with the increasing prevalence of obesity in both the developed and developing world. It covers all aspects of obesity from epidemiology and prevention to recent developments in biochemistry and genetics, and to the varied approaches to management which are influenced by social and clinical need. A foreword by William Dietz and a forward-looking 'future perspectives' conclusion by Philip James embrace an international team of authors, all with first-hand experience of the issues posed by obesity in the young. This comprehensive survey of an important and growing medical problem will help inform, influence and educate those charged with tackling this crisis.

Hypertension is a major health problem worldwide, increasing cardiovascular (CV) risk and mortality. Together with pharmacological treatments, non-pharmacological approaches, such as nutrient intake modifications, play an important role in optimizing treatment. A link has been demonstrated between hypertension and body weight as well as dietary habits. The aim of this Special Issue is to improve the understanding of the relationships between some nutrients and hypertension, and of the effects of different dietary approaches on hypertension regulation from different points of view.

The impact of fat intake on hypercholesterolemia and related atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases has been studied for decades. However, the current evidence base suggests that fatty acids also influences cardiometabolic diseases through other mechanisms including effects on glucose metabolism, body fat distribution, blood pressure, inflammation, and heart rate. Furthermore, studies evaluating single fatty acids have challenged the simplistic view of shared health effects within fatty acid groups categorized by degree of saturation. In addition, investigations of endogenous fatty acid metabolism, including genetic studies of fatty acid metabolizing enzymes, and the identification of novel metabolically derived fatty acids have further increased the complexity of fatty acids’ health impacts. This Special Issue aims to include original research and up-to-date reviews on genetic and dietary modulation of fatty acids, and the role and function of dietary and metabolically derived fatty acids in cardiometabolic health.

Glucose Metabolism Derangements in Pediatric Age

This book addresses the difficult field of pediatric glycometabolic disorders, which have often been considered the exclusive field of specialists in the sector. However, if all the intricate subjects of long-term treatment of type 1 diabetes are certainly a specialist field, the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes or its distinction from other forms of diabetes cannot be considered fields of strict specialization. Indeed, hypoglycemia, metabolic syndrome due to obesity, and drug-induced hyperglycemia are not specialized fields. Instead, we often see the clinician withdrawing from these pathologies. This book provides the trainee pediatric specialist with robust preliminary knowledge of the field.
