The real-life story of Robert Clive would be judged as wildly implausible if it came from the pen of a novelist. Clive of India was one of the most extraordinary and colorful figures Britain ever produced. The founder of Britain's Indian empire, he was also Britain's first great guerrilla fighter by the age of twenty-seven, conqueror of Bengal at thirty-one, and avenging angel of righteousness against the greed of his own fellow-countrymen at forty-one. In his later life Parliament brought him under painful scrutiny and he ended up one of the most hated men in Britain. He died violently under still-mysterious circumstances just before his fiftieth birthday. The story of Clive can be viewed o...

RMS Empress of Britain

The largest ship ever built for the transatlantic route to Canada was the 'Empress of Britain'. But it wasn't just size that made the 'Empress' Britain's greatest liner - her interiors were the finest ever seen on the Canadian route. Designers from W. Heath Robinson to Edmund Dulac created sumptuous interiors while the naval architects of John Brown's at Clydebank designed the exterior. In winter, the 'Empress of Britain' became the most luxurious cruise ship, undertaking world cruises to such exotic locations as Hong Kong, Cuba, Singapore, and South America. In 1941, her career was to be cut short by a lone German bomber that straddled her with bombs. She caught fire and was left to burn, being finished off by a U-boat. It was a tragic end for Britain's greatest liner.

It is only when the House shows it's darker face — when Harvey discovers the pitiful creatures that dwell in its shadows — that he comes to doubt Mr. Hood's philanthropy. The House and its mysterious architect are not about to release their captive without a battle, however. Mr. Hood has ambitious for his new guest, for Harvey's soul burns brighter than any soul he has encountered in a thousand years...

A Postcard History of the Passenger Liner

From around 1880, for almost a hundred years, shipowners commissioned a wealth of paintings that depicted their magnificent liners as well as the routes they travelled, their exotic destinations, and life onboard. These paintings, rich in imagination and atmosphere, appeared on postcards and posters of the day and were used to advertise the companies and their ships; and so was born a whole genre that produced tens of thousands of paintings which formed a wonderful record of the great era of the passenger liner. In 1900, there were over thirty shipping companies operating passenger liners across the North Atlantic. Other oceans were similarly served. But now, with just a few exceptions, the ...
