The Witch of Colchis

Medea longs for a different life. Since childhood, she has been separated from her sister, shunned by her mother, and persecuted and tormented by her brother and father. All because of a unique and dangerous witchcraft. But when a dashing young hero, Jason, arrives to claim the famed Golden Fleece that her father fiercely protects, Medea sees her opportunity for escape. Her offer to help Jason overcome the trials set by her father sets in motion a journey that will test every ounce of her strength, magic and loyalty; a journey that will see her battle monsters, dethrone kings and fall in love. But when faced with the ultimate betrayal, Medea is driven to an act of desperation so brutal it rips apart the lives of everyone involved...

Phasis

`Phasis' is mentioned in Greek, Roman and Byzantine sources, referring to one of the largest and best known rivers, and an associated city, in Colchis on the Black Sea littoral. Lordkipanidze refers to linguistic and archaeological evidence and to legends about the foundation of the city and its gods, in assessing the origins of Phasis and the arrival of Greek colonisers in the 8th century BC. This study throws light on more general relationships between Greek colonies and the existing population and their traditions.

Pichvnari and Its Environs

A detailed study of Pichvnari, located to the east of the Black Sea in Georgia and one of the most important sites of ancient Colchis, the legendary land of the Golden Fleece. Greek vessels, dating from the 6th century BC onwards, and figurines and other objects illustrate the dominant influence of Greek religion and culture in this distant outpost of hellenisation. Pichvnari degenerated into swampland in the early 2nd century BC but excavation elsewhere in the region has found evidence for continuing Greek and Roman occupation until the 4th century AD. The book includes an examination of the archaeological evidence and concludes with an overview of the region's history and numerous illustrations of artefacts and archaeological remains.

The first full history of ancient Georgia ever to be written outside Georgia itself, this book also serves as a valuable introduction to the substantial archaeological work that has been carried out there in recent decades. Designed to open up ancient Georgia for the world of scholarship at large, it is not only a history of a neglected region, but also a sustained attempt to inform topics and issues that are more familiar to the historians of antiquity. Examples include myths of the periphery; Caucasian mountains and their passes; Greek colonization; the Persian, Athenian, and Selecuid empires; Pompey's conquest of Mithridates' empire; the development of the Roman frontier in the eastern Black Sea region; Roman diplomacy in Iberia; the Christianization of Iberia; Sassanian ambitions in Transcaucasia; and Byzantine warfare there.
