Research Opportunities in Corrosion Science and Engineering

The field of corrosion science and engineering is on the threshold of important advances. Advances in lifetime prediction and technological solutions, as enabled by the convergence of experimental and computational length and timescales and powerful new modeling techniques, are allowing the development of rigorous, mechanistically based models from observations and physical laws. Despite considerable progress in the integration of materials by design into engineering development of products, corrosion considerations are typically missing from such constructs. Similarly, condition monitoring and remaining life prediction (prognosis) do not at present incorporate corrosion factors. Great oppor...

Corrosion inhibitors are an important method for minimizing corrosion; however traditional inhibitors such as chromates pose environmental problems. Rare earth metals provide an important, environmentally-friendly alternative. This book provides a comprehensive review of current research and examines how rare earth metals can be used to prevent corrosion and applied to protect metals in such industries as aerospace and construction. Chapter 1 begins by examining the important need to replace chromate, and then goes on to discuss the chemistry of the rare earth metals and their related compounds. Chapter 2 considers the techniques that can be used to identify corrosion inhibition mechanisms a...

It is a mechanics book written for materials scientists. It provides very simple basic principle written for audience with non mechanics background, so that readers who plan to adopt and integrate the mechanics in their research areas can do it the smart way. The book also has plenty examples on the simple applications of mechanics in various materials science areas: in metallurgy, in coating, in design and in materials science in general. This book is filling the gap between the concept of mechanics used in the 'mechanics world' and the concept of mechanics 'outside mechanics world'. It is perfect for researchers outside mechanics, especially in materials science, who want to incorporate the concept of mechanics in their works. It is originally a script used by a research group in materials science with no mechanics background.

Review and Evaluation of Alternative Chemical Disposal Technologies

Review and Evaluation of Alternative Chemical Disposal Technologies

In 1994 the National Research Council published Recommendations for the Disposal of Chemical Agents and Munitions, which assessed the status of various alternative destruction technologies in comparison to the Army's baseline incineration system. The volume's main finding was that no alternative technology was preferable to incineration but that work should continue on the neutralization technologies under Army consideration. In light of the fact that alternative technologies have evolved since the 1994 study, this new volume evaluates five Army-chosen alternatives to the baseline incineration system for the disposal of the bulk nerve and mustard agent stored in ton containers at Army sites located in Newport, Indiana, and Aberdeen, Maryland, respectively. The committee assessed each technology by conducting site visits to the locations of the technology proponent companies and by meeting with state regulators and citizens of the affected areas. This volume makes recommendations to the Army on which, if any, of the five technologies has reached a level of maturity appropriate for consideration for pilot-scale testing at the two affected sites.

Assessment of Corrosion Education

The threat from the degradation of materials in the engineered products that drive our economy, keep our citizenry healthy, and keep us safe from terrorism and belligerent threats has been well documented over the years. And yet little effort appears to have been made to apply the nation's engineering community to developing a better understanding of corrosion and the mitigation of its effects. The engineering workforce must have a solid understanding of the physical and chemical bases of corrosion, as well as an understanding of the engineering issues surrounding corrosion and corrosion abatement. Nonetheless, corrosion engineering is not a required course in the curriculum of most bachelor...

New Horizons in Electrochemical Science and Technology

Modern technology depends heavily on advances in the electrochemical field, but this field may not be receiving the research attention and funding it needs. This new book addresses this issue. It reviews the status of current electrochemical knowledge, recommends areas of future research and development, identifies new technological opportunities in electrochemistry, delineates opportunities for interdisciplinary research, and outlines the socioeconomic impact of electrochemical advances.

Proceedings of the Materials Forum 2007

The U.S. industrial complex and its associated infrastructure are essential to the nation's quality of life, its industrial productivity, international competitiveness, and security. Each component of the infrastructure-such as highways, airports, water supply, waste treatment, energy supply, and power generation-represents a complex system requiring significant investment. Within that infrastructure both the private and government sectors have equipment and facilities that are subject to degradation by corrosion, which significantly reduces the lifetime, reliability, and functionality of structures and equipment, while also threatening human safety. The direct costs of corrosion to the U.S....
