In September, 1219, as the armies of the Fifth Crusade besieged the Egyptian city of Damietta, Francis of Assisi went to Egypt to preach to Sultan al-Malik al-Kâmil. Al-Kâmil, on the other hand, is variously presented as an enli...

Ecclesia et Violentia

Ecclesia et Violentia is an interdisciplinary anthology that explores the phenomenon of violence in relation to the medieval Church, as well as within the structures of that institution. The volume provides a clearer understanding of hostile and violent acts against both religious institutions and clergy, and explores the interpersonal aggression between clergymen or forms of violent behaviour of medieval clerics. It investigates, furthermore, the role of violence in maintaining discipline within religious communities, as well as religious, legal and cultural interpretations of the aforementioned issues. However, despite the many points of view expressed here, the central question the author...

Vom Werden eines Heiligen

In the Vita Corbiniani Bishop Arbeo of Freising (ca. 763-764 to 783-784 CE) wrote a description of the life of Saint Corbinian. This early medieval life of a saint is the object of the present historical analysis. The author describes the changes in the perception of Corbinian from the beginning of his being revered up to the history of research on him. Afterwards he develops from the Vita Corbiniani with the aid of the form-critical method, a modified view of the historical figure Corbinian and his development into a saint. Connected to this is the opening-up of a new perspective on Bavarian church history in the early 8th century.
