A prosa de Catão

Este trabalho é dedicado a uma investigação da prosa de Marco Pórcio Catão (234 – 149 a.C.), assunto que interessou aos modernos, sob a imagem do "fundador da prosa literária latina", e sobre o qual há diversas observações nos textos antigos, notadamente em Cícero e alguns de seus contemporâneos. Trata-se, mais especificamente, em primeiro lugar, de descrever as estruturas frasais e suprafrasais, bem como distintas formas de agenciamento dessas estruturas, que constituem a urdidura da prosa catoniana. Ao mesmo tempo, esforça-se por compreender como tais módulos e procedimentos são manipulados em correlação funcional com distintas situações discursivas, especialmente à luz dos diferentes tipos de textos escritos por Catão, especialmente historiografia e oratória. A adaptabilidade dos módulos frasais e suprafrasais e dos procedimentos aos distintos contextos textuais permite apreender a prosa de Catão como sistema complexo, ou mesmo como matriz de produção de textos, em produtivo diálogo com o mais vasto sistema da prosa pré-clássica, no interior do qual Catão atuava.
