La historia política de Colombia es a la vez compleja, intensa y trágica. Múltiples han sido sus actores nacionales: movimientos sociales, élites económico-políticas, trabajadores urbanos y campesinos, gremios, Congreso, Estado, Iglesia, Fuerzas Militares, guerrillas, organizaciones paramilitares, partidos políticos, víctimas como sujetos políticos, memoria individual y colectiva; y otros actores externos: es una realidad la intervención de Estados Unidos en Colombia desde finales del siglo XIX, y en especial desde los sucesos de 1903, cuando Panamá fue cercenada de Colombia, hasta la actualidad. La Violencia, y las que de ella se derivaron, el conflicto social armado y la memoria hacen parte del trasfondo presente que hoy confluye en la justicia transicional. Todo esto el lector lo apreciará en movimiento a lo largo de las páginas de este libro, en ese inacabado campo de batalla histórica que es nuestra Colombia.

Beginning with volume 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the most comprehensive annual bibliography in the field. Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 130 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year between social sciences and humanities. The Handbook annotates works on Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the Guianas, Spanish South America, and Brazil, as well as materials covering Latin America as a whole. Most of the subsections are preceded by introductory essays that serve as biannual evaluations of the literature and research under way in specialized areas. The Handbook of Latin American Studies is the oldest continuing reference work in the field. Lawrence Boudon became the editor in 2000. Systems of Violence, Second Edition
This book examines the political, economic, and military factors that have contributed to thirty-seven years of protracted violent conflict in Colombia. Using four years of field research, and more than two hundred interviews, Nazih Richani examines Colombia's "war system"—the systemic interlacing relationship among actors in conflict, their respective political economy, and also the overall political economy of the system they help in creating. Several key questions are raised, including when and why do some conflicts protract, and what types of socioeconomic and political configurations make peaceful resolutions difficult to obtain? Also addressed are the lessons of other protracted conflicts, such as those found in Lebanon, Angola, and Italy. In this expanded second edition Richani contributes new chapters looking at developments in Colombia since the book's initial publication a decade ago and a look at the challenges for peace that lie ahead.
