Infrared Solar Physics
Infrared Solar Physics contains the proceedings of the 154th Symposium of the International Astronomical Union held in Tucson, Arizona, March 2--5, 1992. Aimed at active workers and graduate students in solar physics, this volume provides the first comprehensive view of a rapidly expanding discipline that gives us a new perspective on the sun. Measurements across the wide infrared spectral range -- here, from 1 mum to 1 mm -- can probe the solar atmosphere from below the visible surface through the outer reaches of the corona. Taking full advantage of revolutionary advances in detector technology, infrared observations from the ground, aircraft and space have led to a better understanding of solar magnetic fields, atmospheric structure and activity, and elemental abundances. The infrared has also provided new interpretive challenges, such as the appearance of the 12-mum emission lines of magnesium. The Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event: Insights from the Tafilalt Biota, Morocco
Special Publication 485 About 40 million years after the Cambrian Explosion, the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE) represents a second and dramatic burst in marine biodiversity, with major changes in the structure of ecosystems and the progressive replacement of the distinctive Cambrian Evolutionary Fauna by the Paleozoic Evolutionary Fauna. However, the GOBE is not a single, worldwide, short-term event, but rather the complex sum of successive diversifications occurring in distinct taxonomic groups, trophic guilds and regions. This book focuses on the Late Ordovician Tafilalt Biota, Anti-Atlas Morocco, which provides a snapshot of the GOBE in high-latitude regions of the Southern Hemisphere. A series of contributions explore different aspects of the Tafilalt Biota, including its geological setting, the international fossil trade in this area and a series of detailed systematic contributions describing many new taxa of marine invertebrates. This volume represents a significant contribution to the understanding of the Tafilalt Biota and its significance to the GOBE.
The Infrared Spectral Region of Stars
This book provides a review of the work in progress on the infrared spectral region of stars. The most important previous mission, the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) was launched in 1983. Although it was only operating for one year, in that time it surveyed the whole sky for infrared emitters of many different kinds providing a fundamental catalogue of thousands of objects. As a consequence of its success, a new mission to observe the infrared sky is being planned. The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) is scheduled for a launch in May 1993. It should add substantially to our knowledge of the stars. The volume is based on the proceedings of an international conference held in Montpellier, France. It provided an excellent forum for the experts in the field to get together and evaluate the status of current knowledge and analyse the instrumentation.
