This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Pictorial Information Systems in Medicine" held August 27-September 7, 1984 in Hotel Maritim, Braunlage/Harz, Federal Republic of Germany. The program committee of the institute consisted of KH Hohne (Director), G. T Herman, G. S. Lodwick, and D. Meyer-Ebrecht. The organization was in the hands of Klaus Assmann and Fritz Bocker In the last decade medical imaging has undergone a rapid development New imaging modalities such as Computer Tomography (CT), Digital Angiography (DSA) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) were developed using the capabilities of modern computers. In a modern hospital these technologies prod...
In Computer-Integrated Surgery leading researchers and clinical practitioners describe the exciting new partnership that is being forged between surgeons and machines such as computers and robots, enabling them to perform certain skilled tasks better than either can do alone. The 19 chapters in part I, Technology, explore the components -- registration, basic tools for surgical planning, human-machine interfaces, robotic manipulators, safety -- that are the basis of computer-integrated surgery. These chapters provide essential background material needed to get up to speed on current work as well as a ready reference for those who are already active in the field. The 39 chapters in part II, Applications, cover eight clinical areas -- neurosurgery, orthopedics, eye surgery, dentistry, minimal access surgery, ENT surgery, craniofacial surgery, and radiotherapy -- with a concluding chapter on the high-tech operating room. Each section contains a brief introduction as well as at least one "requirements and opportunities" chapter written by a leading clinician in the area under discussion.
This book is intended as both an introduction to the state-of-the-art in visual languages, as well as an exposition of the frontiers of research in advanced visual languages. It is for computer scientists, computer engi neers, information scientists, application programmers, and technical managers responsible for software development projects who are inter ested in the methodology and manifold applications of visual languages and visual programming. The contents of this book are drawn from invited papers, as well as selected papers from two workshops: the 1985 IEEE Workshop on Lan guages for Automation-Cognitive Aspects in Information Processing, which was held in Mallorca, Spain, June 28-30...
An Advanced Study Institute on Ultrasonics in Medical Diagnosis was held in Milan, Italy, from 10 to 15 June 1974. This ASI was of a short five-day duration and limited to cardiac diagnosis by ultra sound only. Since that time, the field of diagnostic imaging in medicine has literally exploded with new and improved means of medical diagnosis such as computed tomography, microwaves, nuclear magnetic resonance and other sophisticated techniques. These developments have enabled medical practitioners to make diagnoses with a minimum of danger to the patient, and a maximum of accuracy never before possible, and represent a multi-quantum advance over the early state-of-the-art presented at the 197...
This book challenges the conventional wisdom that the European Union (EU) is an example of governance without opposition. Building on a concept of opposition that honors both the institutional features of the EU polity and the fundamental functions of political opposition, it argues that legal mobilization and litigation before constitutional courts provides actors and organizations from civil society with an opportunity to challenge and overturn policy decisions that originate at the EU level. Further, it presents case studies of constitutional challenges to the implementation of the EU Data Retention Directive in four Member States (Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Ireland) to illustrate the motivations for, as well as the preconditions and pitfalls of, mobilizing constitutional law. By connecting the literature on social movements, law and politics and comparative government, this book will appeal to readers interested in political science, sociology and legal studies.
CAR is a symposium and exhibition covering the impact of computer and communication systems applied to radiology and other medical disciplines, which use digital imaging for diagnosis and therapy planning. CAR '91 also provides tutorials, but more emphasis is given to a broad variety of specific problems related to medical/technical issues in digital imaging. This is achieved through in-depth presentations of results of current medical imaging projects on a worldwide basis.
Everything you ever wanted to know about multimedia retrieval and management. This comprehensive book offers a full picture of the cutting-edge technologies necessary for a profound introduction to the field. Leading experts also cover a broad range of practical applications.
This book reflects the views of an international faculty and provides an authoritative appraisal of modern radiology. It represents the sec ond volume in a planned series of competent overviews, and is mod eled on the successful first volume, Radiology Today, which was enthu siastically received by an international readership. We were encour aged by the comments we received to continue blending the latest ad vances in radiology with comprehensive teaching material concerning modern radiological practice. The Radiology Today 1982 meeting again brought together outstanding radiologists from Europe and North America for the purpose of sharing their experiences and their viewpoints of the curren...
