This volume explores how context has been and can be used in computing to model human behaviors, actions and communications as well as to manage data and knowledge. It addresses context management and exploitation of context for sharing experience across domains. The book serves as a user-centric guide for readers wishing to develop context-based applications, as well as an intellectual reference on the concept of context. It provides a broad yet deep treatment of context in computing and related areas that depend heavily on computing. The coverage is broad because of its cross-disciplinary nature but treats topics at a sufficient depth to permit a reader to implement context in his/her comp...

Advances in the engineering of sensing and acting capabilities, distributed in a wide range of specialized devices nowadays, provide an opportunity for the fundamental advances in computer science made in the past few decades to impact our daily lives. Sensors/actuators deployed in a physical space – a house, an office, a classroom, a car, a street – facilitate a link between an automated decision-making system and a technologically-enriched space. The Intelligent Environment, a digital environment that supports people in their daily lives, is a very active area of research which is attracting an increasing number of professionals (both in academia and industry) worldwide. The prestigiou...

Security and Artificial Intelligence

AI has become an emerging technology to assess security and privacy, with many challenges and potential solutions at the algorithm, architecture, and implementation levels. So far, research on AI and security has looked at subproblems in isolation but future solutions will require sharing of experience and best practice in these domains. The editors of this State-of-the-Art Survey invited a cross-disciplinary team of researchers to a Lorentz workshop in 2019 to improve collaboration in these areas. Some contributions were initiated at the event, others were developed since through further invitations, editing, and cross-reviewing. This contributed book contains 14 invited chapters that address side-channel attacks and fault injection, cryptographic primitives, adversarial machine learning, and intrusion detection. The chapters were evaluated based on their significance, technical quality, and relevance to the topics of security and AI, and each submission was reviewed in single-blind mode and revised.

We are moving towards a future where environments respond to human preferences and needs. In this world, smart devices equipped with intelligent features and the capability to sense, communicate with and support humans in daily activities will be unremarkable. We already expect our cars to warn us of hazards, track our location and provide timely route advice, and in future we will speak to simple machines and hold conversations with more complex systems, such as intelligent homes, which will help us to monitor conditions, track routine tasks, and program the heating, lighting, garden watering and entertainment centre. But questions have been raised in recent years as to how intelligent thes...

This volume contains the proceedings of UIC 2008, the 5th International C- ference on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing: Building Smart Worlds in Real and Cyber Spaces. The conference was held in Oslo, Norway, during June 23–25, 2008. The event was the ?fth meeting of this conference series. USW 2005 (First International Workshop on Ubiquitous Smart World), held in March 2005 in Taiwan, was the ?rst event in the series. This event was followed by UISW 2005 (SecondInternationalSymposiumonUbiquitousIntelligenceandSmartWorlds) held in December 2005 in Japan, by UIC 2006 (Third International Conference on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing: Building Smart Worlds in Real and Cyber Spaces) held in September 2006 in Wuhan and Three Gorges, China, and by UIC 2007 held in July 2007 in Hong Kong. Ubiquitous computers, networks and information are paving the road to a smart world in which computational intelligence is distributed throughout the physical environment to provide trustworthy and relevant services to people.

This book examines two main topics, namely, Wireless Networking and Mobile Data Management. It is designed around a course the author began teaching to senior undergraduate and master’s students at the Department of Computer Science & Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. The first part of the book, consisting of eight chapters, including the introduction, focuses exclusively on wireless networking aspects. It begins with cellular communication systems, which provided the foundation of wireless networking principles. Three subsequent chapters are devoted to the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Bluetooth, infrared (IR), Zi...
