It consists of the written contributions of twelve papers presented during the IGEB conference in Wadgassen/Germany in 2018. The articles deal with personalities and their work in connection with wind music.
A History of the Music for Wind Band
The book provides a historical survey of the wind band’s music and denotes how historical and cultural developments have influenced it over the course of time. Although the modern wind band developed first in the 19th century, it has its roots in the wind music of ancient times, and music survives that has been composed since the Middle Ages. Therefore, this book covers the music from that time to the present, including the dance music of the Renaissance, the Harmoniemusik of the Classical Period, and the nationalistic music of the Romantic Period, as well as the major wind band repertoire developed after 1900.
The Clarinet in Spain
This book is the first monograph about clarinet and wind music in Spain, studying the professionalisation of the Spanish clarinettists from the early 19th century. The social, academic and professional environment of wind musicians are addressed here through the case study of clarinettist, teacher, composer and deputy bandmaster of the Municipal Wind Band of Madrid, Miguel Yuste Moreno (1870-1947). An analysis and study of the national and international influences on the Spanish clarinet repertoire is offered here, especially, the premiere of Brahms's chamber music for clarinet.
Brass Bands of the British Isles 1800-2018 - a historical directory
Of the many brass bands that have flourished in Britain and Ireland over the last 200 years very few have documented records covering their history. This directory is an attempt to collect together information about such bands and make it available to all. Over 19,600 bands are recorded here, with some 10,600 additional cross references for alternative or previous names. This volume supersedes the earlier “British Brass Bands – a Historical Directory” (2016) and includes some 1,400 bands from the island of Ireland. A separate work is in preparation covering brass bands beyond the British Isles. A separate appendix lists the brass bands in each county

This volume focuses on one city, Rio de Janeiro, and how it became part of a larger world through music and performance. Magaldi describes a process of creating connections beyond national borders, one that is familiar to contemporary city residents, but which was already dominant at the turn of the 20th century, as new technological developments led to alternative ways of making and experiencing music.

The resources were selected from hundreds of published and on-line sources found in journals, magazines, music company catalogs and publications, numerous websites, doctoral dissertations, graduate theses, encyclopedias, various databases, and a great many books. Information was also solicited from outstanding college/university/school wind band directors and instrumental teachers. Lou Koster
Lou Koster (1889-1973) gehörte zu den ersten Komponistinnen in der luxemburgischen Musikgeschichte und hatte hier ungleich stärker mit Vorurteilen zu kämpfen als manche ihrer Kolleginnen in den weltoffeneren europäischen Metropolen. Wie viele andere KünstlerInnen war sie hin- und hergerissen zwischen Heimatkunst und kosmopolitischer Mischkultur. Mit ihren Operetten und Männerchören in Luxemburgisch und anderen Kompositionen wurzelte sie in der regionalen Musiktradition, mit ihren deutschen und französischen Liedern sowie ihren Orchesterwalzern suchte sie dagegen Gehör beim internationalen Publikum. Von der Avantgarde distanzierte sie sich, da ihr das Publikum und die Demokratisierung von Musik am Herzen lagen. Das vorliegende Buch ist die erste Monografie zu Lou Koster und wirft zugleich Schlaglichter auf die weitgehend noch unerforschte Musikgeschichte Luxemburgs.
