A pandemia da COVID-19 demonstrou a necessidade do aperfeiçoamento das ações de prevenção e controle de infecções em navios de cruzeiro. A coabitação de tripulantes em áreas comuns e o contato entre passageiros, tripulação e populações locais facilitam a propagação de doenças. Nesse cenário, o papel de um oficial controlador de infecções, conhecido como IDPO, a bordo dessas embarcações deve ser fundamental para adaptar e executar programas de controle de infecções consolidados e recomendados internacionalmente. Os objetivos buscaram relatar a experiência de implantação e aperfeiçoamento das ações de prevenção e controle de infecções a bordo de um navio de cruzeiro e descrever o impacto dessas ações sobre os tripulantes e passageiros, do ponto de vista de um oficial enfermeiro especialista em controle de infecções.
